Wow .Haven't seen that vid before .nice .I have fond memories of family holidays to Lord Howe when I was a kid .I lived in Rose Bay Sydney near the flying boat base and flew out on the flying boats (showing my age, they used to fly out and back over my house ) .
Had plans to go there for kiting after a mate of mine Steffan Cook from Ashburton NZ lived and kited there with C quads quite a while back .This has reignited the dream .Maybe a nice winter getaway with my wife next winter .How reliable are the winds in winter(be honest now)>lord Howe is a great place to relax if no wind but it would be nice to get 50% of windy days when visiting .I'd Imagine winter swell is relaible but is it from the right direction?

This really is a great close destination. Only issue is having to mail gear there as I understand there are weight restrictions on all flights???
Sure is a nice bit of paradise that is close. Would love to support that island and help keep is nice vibe feel.
Had some friends go there to windsurf a few years ago, they raved about it....will certainly get there in the next couple of years.....

There is a 14kg per bag outward limit from Sydney and Brisbane, and you are allowed a carry on up 7kg, and you can book an extra 14kg bag online. The Extra 14kg bag may not travel on the same flight as you, but could arrive the next day and would be delivered to your accommodation on Lord Howe. Return flights are not an issue because all the Qantas staff at Lord Howe are local residents and they let that sort of thing slip, they do not want to hassle their tourists.
The way I got around the issue was to use one of those bags that splits in two, that way I had 28kg of booked in luggage, which was 4 kites, my board and wet gear as well as bit of camera gear (tripod, filters, etc), which I carried to the airport clipped together as one bag, when I got to the check in counter I split it into two. My carry on was 15kg mostly camera gear but in an airline approved carry on backpack. They did not weight my carry on. The check in person warned me that my extra bag might not come on the same flight, but it did. The only time extra bags will not come on the same flight is if the flight is completely full, and at this time of the year the flights are not very often full.
Book the extra 14kg bag online the price at the airport is double, I'm fairly sure it was only $20 online.
If you need any other help ask me, you probably will not need big kites as the winds in winter tend to be 20-30 knots. If you want to ship stuff prior, send it in a 5kg express post bag, which is shipped by air and get there quite quickly usually within 24-48 hrs from Brisbane, can take an extra day from Sydney for some reason. We can help with the Express Post bags we have them for our shipping and will sell them to you at cost, a single kite will go in one easily (not with its outer bag though).
Send gear to Dave Gardiner c/o Fish Lord Howe, contact me for the address.
