This was raised in the windsurfing forum, and is also relevant to the many kiters who use the sandbar in shoalwater.

As of July 2008, there will be an 8 knot speed limit on all vessels!

Regards the speed limits it says: "An eight knot speed limit applies to motorised vessels within the Shoalwater Islands Special Purpose Zone (Wildlife Conservation) and the Seal Island Sanctuary Zone from 1 July 2008. Non-motorised vessels and craft are encouraged to comply with this speed limit."

Not 100% sure what they mean by "are encourage to comply"?

Full details on all the research is here. They suggest that kitesurfing represents only 1% of the public usage of the area.

The 8 knot speed limit cannot be applied to windsurfers or kitesurfers as they are not considered under the legislation this refers to.

I think WAKSA is already a breast of the re-drafting of this piece of legislation which will include windsurfers and kitesurfers...

Keep an eye on the Dept of Planning and Infrastructure website for info...
