Some more info for those that regularly go through all the topics here on Sea Breeze and have no doubt cast an eye over the active Safety Bay topic at some point in the last 3 weeks or so.

Anyway, I understand and agree that being proactive and approaching visitors is the way to go. Although sometimes the issue is a breakdown of communication due to a majority of our vistors being of european decent and not speaking English.

There has been comments that some of us locals have been negative, suggestions we are whingers and girls coming on sea breeze for a bitch session. The fact is there has been efforts made as you will see by the link below.

http://safetybaykiteboardersclub.ning.com

It was a site started back in 2007 by myself, never really took off as I would of liked. I've spent some time on it over the last 2 weeks to provide more info for locals and visitors. It has been rewarding to have another 20 members join over the past couple weeks, this will show we do in fact have a local group that are prepared to unite and be proactive in educating those that want to enjoy the spot in a relaxed atmosphere where all involved can have fun in a safe environment.

I have very little computer experience, so please consider that and keep your criticism constructive. I'm more than happy to listen for any improvement suggestions from those that care to check out the network. For example how I can get it out into cyber space free but come up in search engines, currently I don't think the Ning social sites do.

Cheers Sam

Thanks Sam, that's really great!

It's good to see that there are now signs up and hopefully it means we can all share the water better.

Cheers!

Great stuff Sam...now imagine if you could get everyone who uses the place to read it. Just an idea, but in addition perhaps some sort of a flyer would help also. If the locals had the flyers in their cars, then they could be put on the windshields of visitors. Surely WAKSA would support your efforts to print a local flyer............anyhow, well done bud.

This is great stuff. Just a question form a beginner though. The pond is a pretty small and busy place for beginners. I took lessons with WA Surf and I like rigging and launching on the windward side of the sandy spit. These posted guidelines say not to rig there but for beginners this is the prefered place no?

As long as I stay clear of the students can I not rig, launch, and land there? I'm just trying to be a good noob.

^^ Sorry mate I can't answer that one other than to say WA surf don't own the windward side of the spit. I'm presuming that was a back hander from the council for their involvement. I suggest you go speak to WA surf..... you should still be covered by their bull shizen unlimited lessons policy. Just ring everyday and tell them your coming, they have commited in writting to have an instructor there for you. How awesome, someone to launch you then be your own private peanut gallery for the rest of your life.

Gruezi thanks for the advice, it's been discussed and yes we will do the flyer thing next year come the crazy season. At the moment there are still crowds around, but they are blowins from over East or metro dude's. Which is cool, because obviously the change in the last week shows they are aware of safe kiting guidlines and how circuit work is the unselfish way for all to have fun.

Thanks again

I knew you guys would get it together. Well done.

We had some issues over here a few years ago. Co-operation with the lifeguards and negotiation by Mr Float and a few others and there is no longer an issue. Our spot is nowhere near as popular but it is great to kite stress free.

Now all we have to do is inform newcomers to stay away from the flags and not kite south of them over the Christmas holidays. Easy. We never have the language barrier though!

How the word "Safety" and these guidelines can be used in the same sentence is beyond me. Take your rose coloured glasses off for a minute and think about it logically for a minute.

Whenever a windsurfer is downwind from a kitesurfer it is a dangerous situation. This is exactly what the guidelines are supporting. Total madness. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I have travelled the world and out of all the locations I have visited, Safety Bay is the only spot where the two activities (windsurfing and kitesurfing) are undertaken in the same spot. Everywhere else the two activities are completely seperated.

Well I guess you have not been to Dutch Inn....... where the kiters used to be downwind in a differnet area and everyone was happy...... now every day 2 - 5 of them come into the windsurfers area for no damn reason at all and cause havoc.

A sign at every location would be a good idea

I believe, he just has a different opinion....and he has a point as well: windsurfers usually feel uneasy downwind from a kiter. It is something to do with the fear of the lines catch the mast....

...however, Rad Lad has certainly not traveled enough.... kitesurfers and windsurfers share the same spot in many places I know or heard of....
