Probable one of the best days at Wanda yesterday, considering there was no wind, just prefect peaks. Only problem were the boat people with paddles screwing the lineup.

Can someone please explain why you need to be 40+, balding, Overweight, and the most boring wave riding ever to ride a SUP please....

They get sent in down this way.
Drop in on them on every wave as soon as you get a few doing it they get the message.

chances are if there was old guys out SUPing at wanda, it would've been piss poor small surf.

I Surf, SUP, Kite, windsurf whatever goes for the daily conditions.

I could say:
"man those kiters that ride thru the flags and groups of grommet surf lessons are wankas".

but i know its only a couple of people so it would be stupid to generalise.

maybe let the 40+, balding guys on there SUPs, what your upto out there and that you will just ride around them if they drop in on you.

we have to share.
unfortunately.

In my experience many sup riders are considerably fitter and larger than many of their surfing counterparts. I been mixing up suping and surfing depending on conditions and I really like both. I have never ever had an issue with any surfer, nor them with me while suping in fact their interest in suping always surprises me.

It is simply superior in so many ways for many riders in certain conditions. (Warmer, more exercise, blow out to lineup/peak, catch fat waves too fat for surfers, easily get though impossible sections, paddle 2km each way to an out of the way wave no problem to get away from crowding, my wave count would be 3 times as many waves in one uncrowded session - even 2 per set, you get the honeymoon period again etc..)

Mind you if it is sucky and firing on all cylinders I will certainly leave the slow draggy SUP board piece of 5h1t at home no doubt and wax up my shortboard lol

Good advice... But the last guy who dropped in on me while supping got a 9inch fin through his board without leaving a scratch on my sup.... If they wanna drop in I won't stop them doing it but I sure as hell won't get off the wave if it's good....

Words can hurt Dark Side.....just because I have a chiselled jaw and am as hard as a coffin nail, doesnt mean Im not sensitive

I Sup Wanda most days and I think bagging all Sup riders is like generalising about kiters being show off's or unsafe. There are some new Sup riders who have never surfed who dont understand that you cant paddle out back and catch whatever comes and motor straight through the line up.

For me the trick is sitting on the shoulder to get the wide one. sometimes sit inside to get the small ones. Sit in the channel and get the close-out reforms or just go to a spot where it is so full that a shortboard cant catch anything.

Sitting on the main peak with 40 shortboarders is not the go.

Surfing is a great leveller. If a bloke is taking too many waves he will be dropped in on. If he is a kook and runs people over he will be screamed at. If a Sup rider doesnt know what he is doing wrong feel free to fill him in.

But unfortunately with 3 Sup schools in the local area and 2 specific retail outlets the numbers of kooks in the lineup is only going to get bigger.......

Wait, dont most of the kiters at Wanda own SUP's anyway?

There's Kev- The Dark Side on his Jerry Lewis
John "Toys r Us" on his PSH Starboard Coreban
Ebay Craig with a different board each time he comes out
Shannon "Black Thunder" has a baysurf Bismark
Alliance James has about 12 boards
Paul "the silver fox" is on board
George "Ghostface killa" was cutting it up today on his Fanatic
Voodoo Brad smashes it on his PSH
Vit rides a Fanatic
Troy "Blow me" has a Surftec
and I have an LSD

who have I missed?

If I couldn't surf I would ride a sup too I guess. Do you ever see a good surfer ride a sup? (unless it's knee high and he is having a laugh and getting in touch with his feminine side) or are they all really just massive kooks like they are in Perth?? And when it gets solid why do they never show? They act so tuff in the small stuff.

Aww c'mon you lot it looks like surfing on crutches. What's wrong with that? When I get old and I need some crutches that's what I'll be doing. Ha just joking.

Venom guy, chill a bit. One day you'll wake up, 40+, balding, itchy prostrate, whatever, and (hopefully) want to keep fit and into life. With your attitude you'll be so frigg'n self conscious you will end up twice as fat, twice as bald, scratching your prostrate beer belly in front of the tele and all the young bucks will be laughing at you.

There's been a lot of vitriol aimed at so called 'old guys' in this forum at all sorts of sport, but particularly KS. It seems to me the real issue is that kite surfers seem to think their precious sport is an extreme sport that only the bold and beautiful can do. That's a total laugh. Kite surfing is not an extreme sport. You want extreme? Go rock climbing, mixed o2 wreck diving, motorcycle racing. The fact that old, fat, balding dude's can quite happily carve up on a kite and board and pimply teens can be instructors shows that you guys are spending too much time with miss Palmer if you think it's an extreme sport. Do something really scary and maybe you'll get some perspective.

I'm learning it precisely because my days of the above mentioned are drawing to an end and it's time to wind it down a notch and I smile to myself when the kite fraternity warns me of the imminent perils and superman mojo of taking it up.

Ha, Ha ,ha...

I think as you become less influenced by the old school media (eg printed magazine) media who's editorials have always stuck up($$$) for their own sport and put others down, you begin to realize that what they write is bias and complete crap, unfortunately people are easily influenced. Each sport has their own levels of extreme and Kiteboarding and SUP are no exception. It works the other way too, you can just cruise.

Talking about Perth and waves in the same sentence (excluding rottnest) is at the less extreme end of things obviously lol

It is the younger generation that is embracing other sports that may be more fun in different conditions and showing just what can be done, without buying into the old school editorial $$ bias way of thinking (Surfer mag, Tracks, Thrasher etc..).

I never heard a pro surfer put down suping and I know a fair few of them that are into it. If you got rogue supers in the lineup that don't know the deal, put them in line as you would do with a rogue surfer too.

Yeah Blakey's really gone downhill. They call him "Porky Cue Ball" these days.
He needs a 20M kite in 30kn and an outboard motor on his SUP to haul his fat arse around.
Venom Guys complaining because Blakey blocked out the sun and he couldn't even see the lineup, and the glare coming off his chrome dome looked like a full moon rising.

The reason surfers detest SUP riders is that 90% have no clue.

There is not much worse than paddling hard to get out past a closeout set only to find the gimp on the SUP 10m in front ditches his board at the last minute and you have 20lbs or more of fibre glass lining up your head.

Sure an SUP can have its place ( fat 3-4ft ) but on a crowded lineup or frothing peak they are not welcome unless the rider is seriously skilled and keeps well clear when required.

They are the new goat boats.

With the advent of excellent mini mals and fish type mals, getting waves at a lineup had got more difficult. ( they sit out deeper on it earlier). Now with sups it has got even more difficult. The problem is with attitude suffers and sups alike as too many people catch a wave then get back out to take another, even if the set was only one or two wAves, people like society are aggressive and inconsiderate in the water.

If you are catching three times as many waves as everyone else, then back off and let some others have a wave. Or if these sups can catch fatter waves then go where this is is possible and don't crowd a line up on waves suiting the short boards.

Alas it is a free ocean and no one can dictate what happens and who gets what wave. but sups are causing increasing friction where I live, that's the talk on the street.

that is where i like teh sup, i have paddled kms away to peaks with no one on them - out teh way of most prying eyes- - too far to lie down paddle - i have even towed my surfboard which worked out awesome. On the way back passing other breaks with surfers on they always ask how it was cos they just watched be score about 100 waves from about a km away - but it is just too far to paddle - they already paddled a km to get where they were.. i think some of them will get sups, they are suuuueper hyped on waves they have seen us get, 2 hours before we get death stares as we approach their peak, gasps of thank god as we pass lol Some where like straddies u could paddle absolutely kms down the beach way past where surfers can walk/paddle - no one there but wildlife, a time i really like standing up lol

venom guy is this post because you didnt get a SUP for your birthday?!

nothing wrong with a bit of sweeping to pass the time if conditions suit, if you can ride a small enough SUP its actually pretty fun in paddle board conditions.

hit me up and ill give you and the missus a free session to get you amped and a little more sociable ;)
