Get Funky, I think its quite good of you to make sure you keep a good distance from any swimmer that comes across your path, or beach user that happens to be around.
Im sure your aware that 50m south of the path is in fact quite narrow and barely enough room to launch.
I would suggest a better idea might be to make it clear to punters that this a kitesurfing area. This is why plenty of those swimmers come to that spot, to watch.
As long as the clubbies are kept happy and kiters use common sense, there shouldnt be a drama. We have just as much right to use the area as anyone else.
Has anyone asked what the lifesavers would like us to do? The guys I have spoken to on the beach all seem cool as long as the flags are given a wide berth.
Same deal with the Floreat Groyne. Im sure no one tries to surf or kite off the City groyne,( the one that gets good banks.) Its a no go area for swimming only. Again in conjunction with the clubbies there, we should ask what can be done to make this safer for everyone. ie, try to discourage swimmers from going there. Its the one place we are allowed, we shouldnt roll over and give it up. If you talk to old school surfers, they fought for years to make it clear that this is a surf spot, not a swimming spot.
Sure everyone needs to get along and it shouldnt be so hard. The less regulation the better.
Hey Corey,
fair points, not sure i agree with some tho. Great advice talking to clubbies BTW.
Recently the beach has washed away leaving a narrow land area. In that case landing should be occuring
further south not north though so that it is 50-75 m from the walkway.
For those - like myself - doing the downwind run of 4kms, sacrificing less than 100m so joe public can relax and enjoy a surf/swim (whatever they do it will have been a pastime there for decades prior to kiting) is not asking much i reckon.
Also lately i have noticed (on the few chances i have had to get out) the Scarb flagged area has crept a lot closer to the 'kiting area' and walkway so that anyone landing
at the entrance to the walk way is easily within the suggested 50m zone. Why you would land at the entrance to the walk way stuns me BTW.
Agree the less regulation the better but then you get below occuring..
Name and shame time:
On Saturday, the bloke on a blue n white (9m?) eclipse Kima. Mate, you have embarrassed your fellow kiters at the Floreat groin by throwing repeated tacks and pizz weak spray in the face of a 13-ish yr old grommy trying to get a few waves on his surfboard. Repeatedly going within a few metres (3-5m absolute max) UPWIND of the poor bugger and throwing 'real hero moves', right where the kid was, with no margin for error. This continued for 10 mins or so whilst I rigged up, until - no doubt sh!t scared - the grommy got out of the water. At that point the kite weilding ignoramus fecked off down wind! This kid was just trying to have a bit of fun in a zone traditionally occupied by groms and swimmers, and a selfish individual like you has so little respect for anyone else it makes me sick.
Whilst the kid was not sitting directly on the groin break he was located much closer to the groin than away and on the inside white wash effectively. He was in the spot where there are always a few younger groms. This is where most kiters walk past before launching - let alone fanging in and out. Gutless, selfish and plain dangerous.

Embarrassing for all kiters in the area.

Above is the sort of behaviour that should not need explaining or guidelines etc, yet here we are seeing it most days there is wind.

As you said Corey, "If you talk to old school surfers, they fought for years to make it clear that this is a surf spot, not a swimming spot." Damn straight and they shouldn't have to forfeight it to the latest dysfunctional kiting kids on the block.
