Is there such a thing as a kiteable-wave at Rotto in an easterly like we are going to get this weekend?

the Winner of the quiz gets a free trip to Rotto. If the answer is "Yes" and there are waves then they definitely also get a lift back.

no problems on the north or south side of the island if you have a rescue boat ready for any drama's. Swell could be up so go search on the north side, otherwise transits. wind could be a bit gusty?

on 2nd thought from a safety point of view.....

if it goes pear shaped there could be serious risks of blowing out to sea.

you would have to be prepared to jetison your kite and swim to shore if there were probs. it was bloody cold in the water today so 40min surfing this morning and I was done for hypothermia.

transits would be safer, if you had a boat.

I beg to differ there Ryland I lived on the island for a few years and have surfed it overhead, doesn't happen very often but when it does it can be a sweet wave, a little bit gutless but a nice long righthand wall with a NW swell and SW to SE breeze.
I wasn't into kiting when I lived there 95 -2000 but am looking forward to kiting a few of the breaks over the next few years.
A boat would be really handy though at a few locations just as a back up.

I think you need a minimum of 2m to 3m plus swell for it to wrap around the island. then its a crumbling reform type of wave. good ramps

It's not so much the size of the swell as the direction. The swell generally comes from the W - SW especially through the summer when most people visit the island but in the winter (following storms) it can be more of a NW direction which allows it to wrap around and hit the northside breaks. Starkbay, Northpoint,Transits and believe it or not even the Basin came get some nice barrelling waves. Unless you live on the island or spend a lot of time there in the winter months you don't ever see it. Often when it's cranking on the northside there is no private boats over there and even the ferrys cancel and it never hangs around long so it's almost impossible to score it when it's on.
I wish I had taken more photo's but I was either working or surfing when it was on, but here is one that I snapped on the Northside. I had surfed it in the morning but by the time I arrived back with my camera it had dropped considerably, if you look closely someone has just taken off.
