Yeh had an epic session's in an estuary. Not sure where you guys where, but yeh don't waste it.

Was a funny wind, came in hard, then went in this pattern over and over again.

very diff to an easterly or south easterly we are used to. Anyone explain that or was it just the weather pattern at the time.?

I work as a sailing instructor down there. You are allowed to sail I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to kite. I've been tempted to kite during work but some of the customers' sailing skills are a worry.

Don't know if about being able or if its a question of being a wise choice of location to kite.
WAKSA are the first to jump on someone for doing the wrong or dumb thing, but then you have the president doing this????
All it takes is a few leaners to play copycat, cause its close to home, get into strife with a ferry, and your 'pure gold' photo op becomes the headline and the president of WAKSA becomes the poster boy for mullaloo residents.
Not the best of ideas really.

By the way I saw this post when it first came up, and really bit my tongue about saying something then, but the last thing we need is more adverse publicity.
Maybe galah or the other mods should lock and let this post fade away.

It's a tough one to call.

On the one hand, kiting at that spot does not seem to be banned (unlike Sydney harbour, for example, where kites are banned outright).

In the middle (sorry only 2 hands) we have the person doing the riding / making the post.

On the other hand, take an inexperienced kiter and/or a kitemare and kitsurfing ends up as the lead story on the nightly news for all the wrong reasons.

There are lots of threads on seabreeze about folks kiting places like Bondi and Sydney Harbour, and if anything leaving these kinds of threads unlocked is the best way to demonstrate the pros and cons (or bans!) of these spots.

We can only hope that people taking up kite surfing are able to assess their own capabilities and the risks of any given spot on any given day. As I have said elsewhere just because you can does not mean you should.

Its an awesome photo, that's all there is to it.
Although the water down there is normally bluer than that.
What a great sport, what a beautiful city.

oh yes....the freeway bridge...is it more than 26m high?
If not there is a chance you could crash your kite onto the freeway and kill eveyone.

It's probably high enough though that you'd just end up wrapping yourself around a pilon if something went wrong...unless it was blowing 50 knots

There's also a heap of nav markers. Great for wrapping crashed kite lines around. Despite that, I don't think there is a problem with competent kiters kiting there.

Well this topic has caused me to make my first post after quite a while of enjoying all the great posts on this site.

Please note before making comment on this post I am ONLY referring to the conditions on an easterly wind or north easterly.

As a local resident and kiter around this area I can safely say that I believe this area is one of the safest around taking into account other boating traffic and obstacles that exist at other river locations. The river here here is mostly 6 feet deep accross with only a small channel on the other side for a boats to travel up the swan and of course the ferry channel. The only boating traffic to worry about are the surfcats.

There are many places along this stretch to safely launch with minimal interference to pedestrians.

Im not trying to sell the location im just surprised it has not been kited more often in the right conditions.

Im sure someone else may kindly inform me why it isnt and I am unaware if any restrictions apply to this area.

I would agree that this is not a beginner location and Please note that the above opinion only relates to an easterly wind.

DO NOT KITE HERE in normal summer seabreeze conditions. I repeat again this post only relates to an easterly.

Sorry for the disclaimers but after reading many previous posts and this being my first time would like to tread carefully.
