Hey Steve,
Don't get your kite strings in a knot mate.
I'm definately not a knotter mate!
I'm not slamming kiddy kites per se. I know you love em.
They're OK I guess if you like that kind of stuff.
There are kiddy kites, and there are big kiddy kites (and I include kitesurfing kites in that category!), trying to lump them all together in order to judge them as worthless or useless, is pointless, it will not stop people having fun on them and actually learning to fly a kite will it?
What I was hinting to in an earlier post is the folly of teaching kitesurfing on the beach with kiddy trainer kites.
You cannot learn to kitesurf with a trainer kite, but you can learn to fly a kite, which is stage ONE in the process of learning to kitesurf
If this method is used, you're not teaching kitesurfing.
Agree see above
You are teaching the flying of kiddy trainer kites on the beach.
Which leads to the possibility of giving the student a false sense of security.
Really? Not in the real world, even blind freddy could feel that there is a big difference between his 2M trainer and 12M LEI
These so-called trainer kites do not demonstrate to the student the power that is required to actually kitesurf.
True, they do give a hint of it though, especially if they take it out on a day like today in Sydney (15-40knots!!) and many will.
They do however demonstrate the skill that is required to be mastered in order to kitesurf even moderately well!
Only a kitesurfing kite will do that.
These trainer kites will not demand of the student the huge RESPECT that is required of real kites.
A 2m trainer is a real kite. If it is flown in decent winds, people get a fast strong dose of power, still not the amount needed to kitesurf, but people are smart.
There are no dead begginers, just lots of experienced kiters who did not learn to have the HUGE RESPECT!!!
And yes Steve, I have instructed some folks (my wife being one) to kitesurf.
Those lessons were conducted in knee-deep water, side-shore wind and 100m off the beach, never at any stage flying the kite on the beach.
Good for you, and you are very fortunate to have such a place to learn, but only time and experience will teach your partner, hopefully you have instilled in her a sense of caution and respect.
And regarding Ian and Mattress, they're big boys, their skin is pretty thick, they don't need you to defend them.
They know me, they know I'm full of sh1t like a lot of folks on this crazy forum.
I was not defending them, just commenting on how you were getting up them.
This forum has more than its fair share of folks who make it crazy for sure!!
Heck, only last week Mattress and I were sailing some nice waves together at my local winter reef-break.
I was on my 6m kite and Mattress was ripping (as usual) the waves to pieces on the polesurfer.
There're no hard feelings, it's only a game show mate!
