went there for new years 2009 - 2010
didn't stay in le morne i was up in the north called tour aux biches, good timing in fact as they had un usual ne winds so a very short trip for a kite.

the trades blow se and off shore at le morne, awesome wave one eye gotta hit that up mate even if you are a twin tipper. world class kegs.

as for places to stay google up some villa's as they will be much more cost efficient.
as for car hire they are all about the same, but just get it confirmed. we got let down at the airport and ended up with no car for the week.
crowded public transport for us.

fill ya boots mate you'll have an epic time.

for more info hit up Kelby Smart from west Oz Kiteboarding, he's from there and knows it very well.

He showed me some pics and vid from his last trip there and the place looks like it is off the hook!

Def high on my list of places to kite and surf.

If ya want to stay in le Morne be prepared to pay for it. La Morne is nothing but resorts for euros. Just find your self a chep room on the south or south east side of the island and car it around. Plenty of nice quiet spots to kite other than euro packed La Morne.

Hey Justin - Its a shame you're not coming earlier. Kitethrills is taking clients from 15 June - 27th July. We will have a pro photographer shooting everyone each day and a safety boat to enable us to kite the incredible waves offshore without ludicrous risk.

The place is really amazing... it always has more wind than the surrounding areas due to the landforms causing a venturi squeeze, it has an upwind current in the lagoon which is sandy / course coral and weed bottom about chest deep. Also another beginner area with super flat water and waist deep.

The waves are varied. An ankle biter for first timers to practice their rail to rail and kite movements with no consequence for mistakes, then waist high, head high or often double overheads. The set up has 6or more different waves at varying ability levels all from the one beach which also has flat water lagoon riding. Its super social on the beach. Awesome place!

August is also a good time to go regarding wind but there are a lot more crowds then as its the European summer holidays then. So we choose to go June to July - still well within the windy season, but more space on the beach, lagoons and waves.

I can suggest some good places to stay but how many are you?

here are some photos of the last trip

Sorry but having checked this kitelife video I felt like I had to do smthg.

Mauritius is NOT a ''pretty big Island'' and certainly not 200k length or 100km width.. it's actually more 60 by 40km.. so you drive north south 1h30 unless you get stuck in Port Louis at rush hours.

Then there is not much of an african wildlife.. we do have a kind of zoo (casela) where you can find lions and all that sh.. but exept that the only wildlife you can see is under the water, or also birds, bats, tropical forest and dears. (the 'ferney' trek is really nice you can also do canyoning which is pretty fun)

And for the surf (without a kite) don't expect a ''pretty good surf'' the only place from the beach is Tamarin but you have to be lucky to have really good waves. You'll need a boat (or a kite) if you wanna to go to the reef where you can find awesome but dangerous waves.

Well exept that it is a fantasic place beautiful landscape, gorgeous sea, flat lagoon, awesome culture mix and people..

Palmar, Indian resort and Mahebourg hotels are on good spots, expensive tourism though..(not a backpackers destination really but i dont know about villas)

You should enjoy Mru is awesome really
