recent estimates are that the population is over 10,000 from around 115 individuals when the last whaling station closed at Byron Bay in 1962.
So they're more like the proverbial rabbits than.. ahem... whales?
If they were breeding like rabbits I think we'd be looking at about 10,000,000 humpbacks. We'd be calling the japanese, or going back to blubber street lighting.
There were a lot of Southern Right Whales down here a few weeks ago, just hanging out very close to shore waiting for the babies to get fit enough for the swim south, pretty amazing, you could hear them breath and smell the stinky whale breath. There might have even been some kiter close encounters......
