Hey kiter-monkeys!

I'm planning a trip to Morocco (Essaouira) May/June and would appreciate any advice or yarns from anyone who's been kiting there. In particular:

- Is it an ok place for a beginner? (How much variety in locations/kiting space would I have? Is it a difficult place to launch/land alone?)

- What are the local shops like? (for gear hire, lessons etc)

- If there's no wind, how much other sport-related entertainment would there be around Essaouira to keep me from going postal?

- Are the good wind conditions for Essaouira similar to those for Dakhla?

I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences there, thanks!

Travelled around Morocco a bit, but never kited there. All I know is Essaouira can get very very windy and very very busy! If there's no wind, I guess you could surf? Guy here at work went on a surfing trip there recently and said it was awesome.

Other than that, Allah willing- jump on a bus and head into Marrakech and get lost (quite literally), in the souks for a day!

I was planning to go to Dakhla early June for 3 weeks.
Decided to go elsewhere based on :

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Morocco
Three kidnappings in Western Sahara by terrorists last year.
General unrest in North Africa.
Long standing cease fire in place but still no official end to the war.

Many tourists still go and are ok.

Essaouria is awesome - i was there for ~1week in Aug 2009. The wind was good about half the days, the other days were spent hopping from restaurant to restaurant drinking mint tea and eating pancakes!

The beach is a bit different - gotta dodge camels, camel sh%t and people who generally dont understand what the hell you're parachuting on the beach for. The beach is prob the worst of it in terms of being a beginner - just find a quiet spot if u can. The conditions when i was there were suitable for most - not too much chop, had my 12m and was chugging along nicely.

Could even sneak up to Tarifa if you've got more time/$.

In general i didnt have any problems, had an awesome time and have preached this to anybody that asks. Enjoy!

By the sounds of it, just book a one way ticket.

That way if you get kidnapped you wont lose out on the cost of return trip

on your way to purchase the "one way" ticket, you could drop your sup off at my house, at least you'll have the piece of mind knowing your sup went to a good home if you dont come back.......... & on the bright side,if you do come back i can charge you storage fees !!! :-)

jokes on the storage fees..................... "your not coming back"

Thanks for the feedback guys! Sounds like I'll be able to keep myself entertained over there.

....And I don't think having to dodge camel sh#t on the beach will be a problem. Sounds pretty much the same as having to put up with the boys in Newcastle really

Pretty much only one beach that I remember. Wind is full on. Best in the morning, very gusty in the afternoon. The beach is large and I had no problem finding a place to self launch and land. Some people will help you if you ask. bring a small kite.

- What are the local shops like? (for gear hire, lessons etc)

I found an instructor on the beach and hired my kite directly from him. Not much choice in equipment though. Most people seem to bring their own kit.

Google.................

Going postal.

in American English slang, means becoming extremely and uncontrollably angry, often to the point of violence, and usually in a workplace environment.

The expression derives from a series of incidents from 1983 onward in which United States Postal Service (USPS) workers shot and killed managers, fellow workers, and members of the police or general public in acts of mass murder. Between 1986 and 1997, more than forty people were gunned down by spree killers in at least twenty incidents of workplace rage.

Thanks "Mr Google"

.....although to be honest I find the idea of someone playing hide and seek in a post office box much more disturbing than the actual meaning....

Hey, I would strongly recommend Dakhla. I have been there twice in the last two years and its one of the best kitespots in the world. Constantly 20-25 knots sideshore winds. Huge lagoon with downwind trips of up to 40km. I stayed at camp Attitude directly at the lagoon and had a blast.

Cheers

Dakhla is by far the best spot. Essaouira is better for windsurf.

If you like being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by desert and water, go there. Constant wind, beautiful spot, not too crowded, and amazing downwind to the "Dune Blanche".

I stayed at ocean vagabond (there is one at Essaouira too), it's the most ""luxury"" place, opened two years ago. IMHO it's the best located hotel, above all for beginners (at the bottom of the lagoon, just at the right of the picture above).

What is the cheapest way to get to Morroco from Perth? Or anywhere in Oz for that matter. I've looked at it but the flights are always crazy expensive but maybe I'm not hitting enough thrifty traveller websites to get the right deal.

Fly out of Australia FIRST! (Singapore is a nice first stop). That's how you will save $.

When I looked a month ago Qatar Airways was the cheapest (Singapore-Doha-Tunis-Casablanca), for around 1100$...But the prices are always changing

http://www.kitesurfdakhla.com/kitesurf

this looks like a great place to kite

On the website its said:

"Note that all kiteboarders need to use a leash (mandatory!) and that we foresee a daily, full time rescue service with 1 or 2 permanent security boats, during the centers openings hours (9.30am - 6.30pm)."

"THE RESCUE SERVICE IS NOT A BOARD RECOVERING OR KITE RELAUNCH SERVICE! If you are uncertain of how to body drag upwind towards your board, or how to relaunch a kite, you can always contact the center and ask for an advanced (security) lesson.
"The price for one week material storage is 60? and automatically includes the rescue service.
"In order to give the best quality with our lessons, we teach with IKO certified instructors that speak multiple languages. You can take lessons in French, English, German, Spanish, Dutch and Arabic (depending on availability.)"

Just visted the website and .... are your kidding me? It says 'Leash mandatory' and 'Advanced lessons' for just body dragging upwind! That sot of lack of skills in a 20-35knt side-shore they promote sounds like a nightmare scenario of a load of tourists learning in full conditions. I'm a bit skeptical now ...

Nice 1 Ric yes they have a bar, the local beer is Stork, but no karva.
You can use the rental gear between 9am-1pm and 2- 6pm, choice of kiting in front of camp, flat water spot round the corner, arvo 10km down winder to a sand dune flat water + surf trips where cross on made for glassy right handers behind a little headland.

Essaouira, the windy city. 45 knots
http://www.club-mistral.com/en/destinations/weather/18
(link for wind reading)
Kited here this morning, on water at 10.30 am. 9m north evo fully depowered and over powered. Went back to get a 7m, others on 4m.
Very gusty (like squids on a shocker of a day)
The locals had a race planed for this arvo but as far as I could tell they didn't run it as too much wind. So windy the head of my beer blew off.
Will try again earlier tomorrow before the wind kicks in.
Ps Ric, I had a second beer for you

Ps the term "going postal" has now been replaced by "going norwegian".
