Getfunky, Good topic... my kids are 8 and 6, wife can scuba but not kite so I will be interested to see what suggestions come up too.

I would have thought taking the whole fam to the Cocos would be exxy.

Nam is not the go for us. Speant a couple of weeks there on honeymoon in 2001 and couldn't get outta there quick enough. Hard not to generalise about the whole country as there is a least 3 differant cultures all goin on in Vietnam (Nth, middle and sth) but we got pretty ordinary and often hostile treatment (especially in Hue) most of the time... Bloody overated compared to most of asia... hmm does have wind though

You can't go past Coral Bay if you need to keep the wife and kiddies happy. It has the greatest beach for kids, the best snorkeling and most of all the hotest backpackers!!

Better pack my mirror sunnies and bruising repair ointment (for when wifey gives me a backhander). Bl00dy 20/20 eyesight can be a real problem with cute backslappers soaking up the all-over tan!!

We have a great spot here on the beach , we pump up right out front . 9m kite from about 11am on. Heaps off restraunts and bars . Great spot for partner in mind. Mui Ne Vietnam. Getting a cab to drop us up the bay for a downwinder latter on this morning.

Kiting in Coral Bay is very tide dependant (shallow coral), there is not much beach to launch on, heaps of people in and out of the water and lots of boat traffic although that may have changed with the building of the boat ramp further south.

Kiting is still possible but it is mostly flat water as the waves are about 1.5kms out breaking on shallow, sometimes exposed, coral. Not very friendly when you are on your own. The big bay just South of Paradise Beach looks good but with limited access. 4WD at the very least.

My suggestion would be Exmouth as it has the best combination of flat water and waves and a BIG range of accomodation options. The snorkling is way better and there's more sea life including dugongs, turtles and humpback whales. The downside is you have to drive some distance (can be upto 60-70kms) to various beaches/bays.

Can't beat a holiday in your own backyard...
