I was at Loloata Island (a fancy resort near Pt Moresby) last month, and reckon that the beach on the back-side of it is decent for kiting. For those who need to make the missus feel good with a luxury beach resort AND get a kite in, this spot works...

ps- I don't work for the place; it fills up on weekends but is empty during the week; the beach on the back-side of the island is ~200 metre walk from the resort, but you have to climb up onto the spine of the island, then find the little track down to the other side. The SE trade winds are side-shore to the little beach, which has flat water for ~400m in all directions.

For everyones elses perspective, the bottom two shots are taken from the top of the big boob shaped hill in the centre of shot one. This is the area I was taught by the legendary Jay P 5 years ago and where I kited most of my first 2 years in the sport.

The middle shot shows the lagoon and and reef directly out from the beach in shot one. The beach is usually sheltered from the wind by the hill, so it looks calm, but as Jay has said once you get out a bit it is howling most days this time of year. Flat water and wave location, it rocks!

The bottom shot shows a flat water lagoon directly to the left of the hill in shot one. The hill is actually a point. Wind is onshore here, but protected from swell by the reef and a great flat water site to learn or get into freestyle.

Did I mention all this is 10mins from downtown Port Moresby?

Tell me more about the surf/waves ????

we get lots of fun waves at sero, waist to head hi most of the time with a few over head days each month ( i ride surf board almost exclusively now) the set up is cross on and you can go left or right off the bigger peaks over the bommies.

further out you get the main reef which is on average 2x bigger than what ever is hitting the reef at sero. its 5-8km off shore so a big effort to get to, but well worth it! out here you can kite around till you find the perfect combo of wave and wind direction.

then there is hula 2hr drive south of port moresby, it has a lot of varied waves. with real beach breaks, breaks on bars and also big reef action too.
