The bridge looks romantic but it's nothing compared with the conditions we're used to here in Australia.

I'm an experienced kiter and have lived there for a couple of years but I would not kite under the bridge. The water is absolutely freezing cold (people expire after 60 minutes immersion even wearing a thick wetsuit). The Farrallon Islands just offshore is a white pointer breeding ground where they live for the seals who breed at Stenson Beach about 8 km north of the Golden Gate. The tide going in and out can run at 7 knotts so if your kite goes down you will be towed out to sea. [My friend was recued by the coast guard after being towed couple of miles out. Luckily he had a radio to call the coast guard]. The wind is always cold (summer breeze is typically 11 degrees C). It is spectacularly beautiful but a seriously hard core. Australia by comparison is paradise.

There's only two other places you can kite in the San Francisco bay area which runs 50 km north-south. One is near the San Mateo bridge where there's a tiny beach about 200m long, walled by rocks and the water is mirky. This is where the Google founders kite. The other is near Oakland in the east bay where the water is shallow, warmer and it is like kiting on a river.

While I wouldn't say the actual country, meaning the land, is over rated, all of America(and that includes Canada and Mexico not just the goodoleusa horray) is stunningly beautiful. Having lived both in the US and Mexico and traveled both extensively, there are some people as well as the gov that give it a bad wrap. There are people there who think the world revolves around the Mericans. Not all are like that and traveling around will show anybody that there are good people, as well as "a" holes to be found
Saying that though, I have been in Oz for 25 years and it IS paradise. We are lucky stars to be living in such a place. Anyone ever complains about their lot here in this country need to get on a plane and see what its like in other countries.
As far as surfing in nor cal or under that bridge, you can have it....I hate cold water. If its too cold for 3/2 and you need booties gloves and hood, i want no part of the ice cream headache.
