Thousands of sharks? Seriously dude, why were you kiting? I know Florida has heaps of sharks- saw it on discovery channel so it must be true. But why would you go kiting when thousands of sharks has closed the beaches?
In saying that, I went kiting today at my spot (briefly) and I get home and the wife tells me there was a shark that had a go at a dog just a kilometer away.

shark tourism is big business in Florida, they go scuba diving to feed and wrestle with them (they even have professional shark "wranglers")

Number of kitesurfers world wide approx: 200,000
Number of kite surfing deaths this year = 1 (i haven't heard of any other)

200,000 / 1 = 0.000005 (multiply by 100 = 0.0005 % chance to die from kitesurfing)

Therefore approximately 11 times more likely to die from a car accident.

I guess you could argue that your accumulative chance of dying is slightly increased if you both kite and drive :-)

Actually we can use this to quieten our local spots. Lets find out favorite flat water spot and then spend the next month talking about how many sharks we've seen there so everyone else shifts to the other spots.

We'll need to alternate and back each other's stories up so its more believable and find random pictures of sharks off the web so we can claim they're ours. 2 posts a week should do it and if we get the newspapers on board with some claims about massive sharks, we might get away with it. It would help if the water is murky so the guys can't disprove our sitings from helicopters.

I reckon if we play our cards right we could get Altona and St Kilda back as the quietest kiting spots in victoria.
