Hi Guys,

I decided to make a few kitesurfing tutorials in my free time. I just wanted to get some feedback, if you would be so kind!

These videos are not formal. I have tried to make them a little more light hearted than the norm.

Regards,
Kevin.

Tutorials include:
How to SBend
How to Raley
How to kite Blind.

A few tips for you

1. When the words come up on screen, they last just long enough to read them at a normal reading pace. If you are trying to visualize each part of your instruction as you are reading it, you will naturally take longer to read. The words will then have to last longer on screen.

2. After the instructional words pop on the screen, I would include a close up screen shot, of that part of the move. So people can identify more clearly with the instruction.

3. Personally I Think you should back up the words, with a voice over. It is far easier to learn from watching an instructional video with a voice over, with using words as a backup.

4. In the railey video. Spelling mistake in the word "trick".

Great videos and good length, keep up the stoke.

I think they're great!

I've been looking for some clear instructional videos such as these for a while.

I don't do any video editing or production, so maybe I'm easily impressed, however I think the splash screens and other elements of these videos are very well done.

Congratulations and thanks.

Great. Well done. The subtitles may be a bit fast but watching the vid more than once makes this a non-issue to me.

Why do you wear boardies over your wetsuit?

I think the tricks would look better if the water was a bit flatter

Ahhhhhhh,

I just wrote a big long reply, then hit backspace a few times and it sent me back to the previous page. I lost all my typing!!!!!!!

Its nearly 3am here, Bed, and type it up again tomorrow.

I would slow down some parts, like really slooooow down:) This would enable me to read and watch carefully.

But, good effort! Yeah! (gee, myself watching to much tv at the moment)

Next time, before any more keystrokes press ctrl and Z together, to a computer it means 'undo that last stupid thing I did.'

(I'm surprised a person with such video editing skills doesn't know this one.)

Hi guys,

I have a lot of comments and questions to answer, so bear with me..

Firstly, Thank you to everyone who has commented on this thread!

Joe Cron:
Ctrl+Z does not work in the browser I'm using, Firefox.

Kyteryder:
I do agree with you about the close up shots, I will work on this for future tutorials.
With regards to your other points highlighted, I did put allot of thought into the format of the videos. Maybe it is personal preference, but I will try to convince you why I think my way is better....
When I watch tutorial videos I prefer the videos that give instruction through text, as I always pause the video at different intervals so that I can visualise and act out the manouver. I find the text helpful here as I can pause on the text and go through the instructions in my own time. If the instructions were given in a voice over, I could not do this.(i.e. I would keep having to replay the video to get the instructions relayed).
Also I do concede to a few spelling mistackes! Sorry.

LostDog:
Boardies over wetsuit..... Well I am originally a sailor, so wearing boardies is vital if you don't want a hole in the arse due to all the moving around. And when you get used to wearing them, you feel NAKED without them, its a strange feeling. Cover up Guys, wear boardies!! ha ha.

Oh I nearly forgot to say. The reason that the text is fast is because I decided to compromise between the people who are reading the text and the people that are willing it to move on as soon as possible! So the text is fast to keep the general audience interested, this is intentional.
As DJF has said, thats what the pause button is for.....

Super slow motion becomes difficult as camera quality comes into play, I do use twixtor when I slow-mo but I gets blurry if the FPS is low or the subject is too far away. I will have to work on this too.

Cheers for all the comments, I really appreciate it!!

Regards,
Kevin.

OK I like the concept and you've done well.
I would tell you to get a copy of "The Book" how to wakeboard dvd as it has alot more information on the tricks you are doing and will help you to put a better how to format together.
I use this dvd as a building block for my own instruction and the instruction of advanced rider tricks.
It also show's a list of tricks in order you should learn them. so a raley has to be done before an S-Bend.

Another thing is correct trick knowledge and explaining a raley position is your arse above your head, and true raley is extremely difficult and done with legs straight.
Bending your knees so your feet are above your head and your back is arched is going to allow you to progress into an S-bend manouvre.
That said you've got a perfect raley in there against an average one?
The S-Bend looks great :)
Also Riding location Absolutely sick love it is this in AUS??

Cheers Sorse,

I will check out that Dvd.

You were saying that one of the raleys was average, I just used the clearest footage that I could get. I didn't mind putting up shots like this as it shows progression.

The location is not in Australia, not even near in fact. Filming was done in the West of Ireland. It is in my opinion the best flat water spot in Ireland, its Keel lake, Achill Island.

Spot looks wicked,
I only said about the raley as I was taught to be a snowboard instructor, and they drill you on making sure you show the correct everything.
If your doing a tutorial, you can't put up something that isn't right, unless you say what is or isn't correct and show case this.
A couple of the raleys the kites were reasonably high and the only reason the looked ok was because the rider is flexible enough to have his back bent and feet above the head. He actually has head head and arms quiet high and if his body were straight wouldn't be close to a raley position.
Hope that makes sense, depends who your vid's are aimed at?
The editing is awesome and it's shot really well. I hope you continue as I'd liek to see more of it..
I'm not perfect and no one is, just giving some feed back.
ps when I watch my own riding back I hate some of the silly things I do..

LOVE IT!!! I'll learning sbends atm (landed a couple not very consistent) so i'm studying that video thoroughly for todays session, few things i've not read before :)

As said before with the video, give plenty of opportunity to read the text, found myself pausing to finish reading your tips. Would love it if you would elaborate on the part where you say throw head onto front shoulder... throw head onto front should, then stare under/over alternate shoulder? (I should probably know this)

Also as was also mentioned you can try interpolating some slow motion depending on the program your using (i think twixtor is available on most platforms these days) depending on the compression your original video was taken at you can slow down video to almost a 1/4 speed without any real visible artifacts. Oh and the music in that video :/ feel like im watching a lord of the rings movie... something EPIC anyways hahaha

Aside from that well done mate!!

The videos are good and worth pursuing. They are good at showing both the rider and the kite.

The only suggestion I have is to also fit a camera at around the bottom of the front lines. I have seen an instruction video that had that angle and it was very good for showing the detail of what the rider was doing.
