So I went out for a fly, honing in my rolls to a degree, and then after a decent stack I notice bit's of my board floating by!

Now to make another... but then I'll possibly just do this to it again... hhmm... maybe a 'real' board hey.

Anyone else trashed their DIY gear?!

Yes. I recently tried rock hopping with my light wind ply board. No hopping happened, just crunching underfoot. Ugly. A new board was on the cards anyway. Shortly after that my mid range board suffered a "split" near the tip thanks to aircraft baggage handlers. Thankfully this board still worked fine on Tuesday in the crankin SE we had though. Gotta go, vac pump needs finishing and need to laminate the core for my new boards.

Would I go back to a production board? No thanks. Wouldn't give me half the joy of riding my own. Cheers, Warren

Where abouts is a good site can you find the gouge on the net to make your own board?

Looks like fun and something I could have a crack at whilst waiting for some wind

Especially seeing the frequency of losing my boards..........

Hey Choady,

I made a plywood board last winter and got a lot of info from a co. called Racing Finish in the UK. The web address used to be www.racingfinish.co.uk but the link seems to be dead. Anyway, I bought a step-by-step guide on making a board from them in pdf format. If you know of a way of receiving large files (65MB) let me know and I can send it to you.

Thanks for that. The following websites allow free transfer of large files with no registration or giving of your email address. All you need to do is give the receivers email address and they get emailed a link to where the file is to download.

http://www.sendspace.com/ and www.transferbigfiles.com/

Ive PM you with my email address.

Cheers

Hey Nuker,

Good luck with the vac bag!
Have a mate who's working on one of those, seems like a mission to get sorted! Would love to give it a go tho. Are you putting concave in your board?

As for ideas for making my board, I think I read an article on here one day that just spoke about someone cutting a shape out of a 'marine grade ply' - that's not marine ply but close enough, and cheaper - Cut out my shape, curved it using 2 different methods for my first board and this one.
1: Strapping the board to the work bench, wet it then steamed it with an iron - worked ok, iron was kinda effed....
2: soaking the whole board in a bath, then putting the 2 tips under a piece of wood, whole heap of weight in the middle till it had enough rocker, left it to air dry and hey presto!

Couple of coats of a polyurethane and I'm done!

Where's the wind?

I've been on solo Dad duty since Fri os didn't get to the pump. 2 X klegecell foam cores are cut ready to shape though.

I found that a solid wood board was too heavy. Having made 2 now with foam cores + 3mm ply their light weight is excellent. I made a jig to hold everything together then parked 2 cars on top to press the boards together while resin sets. Hard work but the only way I could get it all to actually go together due to the dual and triple concave I used. Not sure if I'll go for triple again as double seems enough for a home made plywood special.

Re your mate and the vac bag hassle, with the hassle I had in getting the jig right I figured I might as well go the vac bag option. I'll be doing a dry run first to ensure all is sweet before applying resin!
