Hi everybody,

I'm going to Maui next week and I'm looking for an apartment or house to stay for 10 days. Preferably Kahului or any other spot close to Kitebeach.

I don't know what to do with my surfboard, Airline can charge $100 for a board per flight and may be it would be cheaper just get anything old and use it there.

I hope my 9m kite would be enough and I don't need to have a smaller kite :)

Any feedback about places to go for dinner, what to see, etc is greatly appreciated.

lucky you.. i recon 9m is definatley too big if your a normal sized bloke. 6m or 7m is ideal. just hire one there if you cant borrow anything.

Maui is a great place to kite at kite beach and the winds are very strong. Check out Dejavugraham on You tube as I have a small GoPro video which may assist in kite size selection this time of year. I was there in 2010 and 2009 in late June and the winds would indicate a 7-9M. The launch area is pretty much ironstone gravel but with care its OK. lots of beginners also but once out it is fine. There are a few shady trees to rest under and they have a couple of permanent porta loos. Other than that there are no facilities and no fresh water. The Neil Pryde shop is very good back in town and Chris, the Manager will assist in a board and other gear also. There is also a hire shop just down the road from kite beach opposite the treatment plant. They could assist also. The flights from HNL to OGG are pretty strict on weight. There is also a whole foods in Kahului which is great for breakfast lunch and dinner. As far as accom, right opposite the Kahului Mall are quite a lot of options. If you did not have a car you could cab to kitebeach for a couple of bucks or walk in about 20 mins. I prefer Kailua myself....awesome. Have Fun.

I'm not sure about Maui, but I was in Ohau and tried to hire some gear from a shop at Kailua. Unfortunately they would hire boards but not kites due to liability issues. It would best to email a few kite shops on Maui if you are thinking of hiring kites just to cover yourself.
(Obviously they supplied all equipment if I wanted to book a lesson)

1.take your board, dont mess around (unless it is a piece of 5hit), it cost but when u arrive without one you may cry (mind u if u are a cisco expert maybe just buy 3 when you arrive lol)
2.Print out the conditions of your baggage from the airline website - keep it in your pocket for checkin
3. u may need smaller than 9m - but not much bigger if at all fooor suuuure

close to kitebeach is not so nice, kitebeach is a bit of a 5hithole but i love it, mind you i would stay nearbyif i could cycle to kitebeach and stay in safe place, otherwise upcountry and drive everyday($$$ but beautiful) or kehei and condos which is not too far and less $$. njoi, i looove that choppy wind machine called maui- it's not too bad at all, the chop is quite big so not really annoying.

Hi Ciscoexpert,

No point trying to find accomm around Kahalui, better bet is to visit a mob called Word of Mouth Car Rentals on Maui, they used to hire some of the biggest POS cars for next to nothing, then get yourself a nice little condo over in Kahei. It's a nice drive to Kahalui through the cane fields. It can be a good kite spot too when the wind is in the right direction.

For food, if you like fast food, there is the usual gamut of crap and it is so ridiculously cheap. There used to be a place in Kahalui called "Mother Earth" which was all fresh food paid for by the kilo and served in buffet fashion, a bt pricey but very good selection of fresh stuff.

I used to like Wendy's for a burger and salad. Also worth a trip to Paia for cheap quality eats and a look at Ho'okipa if it's firing. Lanes can be kited and is excellent but the launch is as treacherous as any I have ever seen.

You won't need more than a 9m and if it is a good season, a 7 will do the trick for most winds. Not much to do on Maui if you like night life, but there are a couple of good restaurants on Kehei side.

Oahu is great but wind is lighter and steadier, rent is more, but more to do. I prefer Oahu myself, but you need a car to get to the best spots (Mokulaiea, Kahala and Kailua).

Don't F%&k with the Hawaiians, they don like the Houle's as a rule, especially if you surf.

My word of mouth car rentals (they got another name too now)

Booked online, put in CC details. Turned up with confirmation printout but said cos i didn't confirm they did not have vehicle - great start to my trip. Might have been just one bad employee but they were super unfriendly. Then the car we eventually got broke down and they said stay with it all night or we will have to pay fro vehicle in full lol - yeah whatever - it had an overheating engine stop thing going on and we sorted it out - we went to other side of island (which he said was not allowed - never told us - never gave us a leaflet with this..) when we rang to say it has broken down he it was as if his head was going to explode. Chill pills all around. The other time a guy came to pick us up and took one look at our gear and said "thats not good" nothing else - certainly different some of those rock dwellers.
