First group booked 3 Melb kiters dodging the ice bergs, a further two groups looking at coming early to mid August, we now have sola power fridge, and TV to chill the beers and laugh at the days gopro antics, 3 beach bures complete and a third framed, club hous framed and the roof thatched with the flooring under construction, check out the photos, the photo of the round hous is the Kai ( Eat ) hous not the club hous

Cheers

there should be some surf off shore on the outer reef about 8km from the kite camp, otherwise keep going on down the highway to hula village for waves. probably take about the same amount of time either way.

I just got back on Sunday from Gelebara Kite Camp, and it`s outstanding for a budget, fully lit kiting experience!.A huge sandy bottomed playground, being a sandbar fringed by reef about a km or so offshore, and a sandy spit to keep the water flat upwind.Local Papuans provide boat support when required, watched over by the camp`s manager,Mark,a talented kiteboarder himself(a good bloke too).Fresh seafood can be bought from the villagers as they amble on by in the mornings, educating us on the latest catch of the day.We had deep fried squid on a couple of nights-delicious!The winds were strong every day, reaching 25-30 kts and mostly steady, but uncharacteristically cross-offshore while we were there. We`re told it`s normally cross-shore to cross-onshore.Our party ranged from very experienced wakestyle kiters, through intermediate to beginner, and we all managed to kite every day, thanks to the right equipment, and a safe location. There are other locations nearby for kiters who need waves(Hula),and Taurama Beach near Moresby is good when it`s too windy elsewhere. It definitely should be on your list if you want an O/S kite trip not far from home.

Bolli,

Thanks for the great post, Especially the talented comment, a little generous, however I think you referring about a old fat fella ;-) it was a real pleasure meeting and having your company, the locals love having all of you, From the gelebara gang thanks for coming

Cheers

Grumpy

Love you to come and visit, no real waves at the camp however you will enjoy the down winders which is like the sunnnie coast on a flattish day, wind waves! And you will love the camp great kiting with the PNG experience. If the swell is up you can get good wave off our local beaches or travel 2hrs further past Gelebara camp to hula, which I would recommend if time permits.

I will try to call you soon to fill you in on the details

Cheers

First group done and happy, second group just arrived, with get forecast for the next week. If you are after a affordable kite trip with a culture experience, wind and warm, then think about a trip at a cost of under $400 per person twin share, plus food and drinks ect; with air fees about $500 return ex Brisbane, you can kite until your arms full off! For under a $ 1000.

Last group from WA review

Hi, I have just come back from a week at Gelebara kite camp. I have travelled to many places with and without my kite gear-Spain, morocco, Africa, SE Asia etc. Go to Gelebara! We were two mates on a casual (budget) trip with the aim of taking in some kiting, snorkelling and getting into some local seafood. The time spent at Galebara exceeded both of our expectations ten fold. Firstly the kiting setup- I'm from wa and I would describe it as the best kiting playground I have seen. It's got something for every kiter and keeps changing throughout the day with the tide. The wind kicked in at around 9am until sunset and it howled for a week! Warm water, flat water, small boosting ramps what else do you need?! Secondly the people - the camp is run by locals with support from an expat Aussie. You will feel like part of the family after the first campfire cook up. If you are prepared to roll your sleeves up and get involved then a bounty of amazing experiences is ready and waiting. Finally the accommodation - it's beachside bungalows with decking, couches, showers etc. it's basic yet it's exactly how it should be. You sleep, eat, drink beer literally metres from the water. I'm planning on posting some pics in the coming weeks. Go to Galebara with a relaxed attitude and open mind and you'll not be disappointed. Enjoy!
