Yes the winds will be honking this week and probably a few days beyond due to a large high sitting right under fiji .there has been no wind for the last 2 weeks due to a large low right under fiji .Fiji does have lulls and change in wind direction which can kill the wind in some spots as lows and highs pass under but lulls that long are unusual .It was the same low that brought freezing conditions and snow to Auckland .So if it snowin in Auckland there prolly won't be any wind in Fiji

Hmmmm..... Well I've been here in Fiji for the last4 days and the most wind I have seen is 15knots or less. So I'm not sure where this 20+ knots is coming from.

Had a few good waves though.

howdy

We've had 25+ knots since last Friday - been a huge week of winds...and the weeks start starting!

Been kiting on 7m kites and loving it. Yesterday had 25 knots again, no shortage of wind up here in the Vatu-I-Ra Passage as the local squeeze adds another 5+ knots to the nadi forecasts.

Hope this weeks group of kiters survive the week.....going to be close!

I guess you can't have it all. We are going to see how the swell is over the next few days and maybe head down there on Saturday for a day or three.

Just back yesterday from Fiji, Nananu-i-ra, Safari lodge.

A yacht moored on the lee side was getting 38kt gust on his readings.
I retreated from the 7m to sailboarding on sub 5m sails and sub 90L boards for middle part of week.

Not usual Trade winds til Thursday Friday when it settled to the 20-25kt Trades we are used to. Something to do with the weird NZ weather.

Seventh year there, yet to be disappointed. Although now I get more picky with tide and going to my favourite reef spots.

How many days were you there this trip and how many days kiting did you get? Did safari lodge last year and the Cook islands this year, got 8 out of the 11 days kiting on the Cooks this year but they also had problems with the trades setting in. After 7 trips to Fiji how did this year compare tp the others wind wise? Thinking cocos next year or Egypt

we were there 10 days this time instead of the normal 15. (one day I couldn't bother with a fully depowered 7m so windsurfed)
from reports of those there already we would have had about 3 unkitable days and maybe 2 days of barely kitable. the 10 days there were full on all 10 days.
However the first couple of days did need to be out at the outer reef due to a bit more South in the wind than is usual for trades.
the guys already there were talking about having kited in the bay in front of Bethams and McDonalds which I have never even closely seen posible, so wind was far from normal.

Lucky you .The weird NZ weather (massive low over NZ that hardly moved ,snow in Auckland) had more to do with the 2 weeks of no SE wind from the beginning of August and not the 2 weeks of wind since then . A group of friends of mine were there at that time .unusual that there is a lull this long a real bummer . BTW in my experience of going to Fiji and watching the weather over there for years there are always lulls as the normal progression of highs and lows .so if you are going for 10 days say expect a few days off .It does not blow all of the time . Fiji is a lovely place with lovely people and is not that far away and inexpensive (generally) .I don't think I would be going to Nana Nu i ra for 7 years for the kiting (flat water is not my thing) I have found that the coral coast has some good small to medium waves on the reef (not for the faint hearted) and good waves and wind at Sigatoka rivermouth

I go for the extreme hammocking, plus each and every year the faceless email addresses building up the group all become humans as they arrive and great friends by the time they leave.

Kiting and windsurfing are just the icing on the cake. Plus after 7 years of exploring, we know some secret spots.
