Hi!

I'm from the US, and often look over your forums for news on new gear (as you guys always seem to get it first!)

That said, I'm considering taking a trip to East Timor and hopefully kiteboarding there (yes. I'm experienced, been kiting for 11 years, so empty beaches with no support is fine), but really can't find ANY information on it. It looks like there are a lot of beaches, but very little info in terms of wind or other kiters.

SO, since you guys are from Australia, and East Timor is a heck of a lot closer to you than it is to me, perhaps you Australian forum folks might have some more information?

Thanks!!
Adam

Have you picked this spot for a kiting destination or do you have other reason to be there and will also kite?

It's not one of those palces people go for hoidays, but may very well have a few surprises for those willing to explore and take a chance!

If you are going just for kiting holiday, there seams to be a few crew in PNG that are now kiting a fair bit and the trade winds though our winter are pretty consistant along the bottom coast line.

These charts indicate the wind is a little better along the bottom part of png

You might need a really big kite.

I was deployed to Timor Leste in 2001 and lived there for 6 months. Although the majority of my time was spent patrolling the border in the mountains we had a section attached to one of the companies at Batugade. The North coast is very light or no wind during the middle of the year but there can be better wind during the monsoon.

We have had a couple of customers still posted to Dili over the last couple of years, mostly with bigger kites. Maybe some of them use this forum and can give you some more accurate advice.

Remember traveling through Timor to get to Roti, for some fantastic waves, far as I can remember 10 to 15 kt midday wind every day, our winter, wasnt kiting then, 1996 but the surf was sick and quiet.

Sure this is a hit or miss spot for wind, but as I said great quiet waves, but this was all pre Indonesia turmoil. We just got out before all Hell broke loose, beautiful country tho...

Hey Werty,
I was there in Roti also in 1996,1994 and 1992.
I also just got out in 1996 before all hell broke loose, with a few guys I had met from WA.
Your not one of these guys are you?
Pics a bit blurry,,,but we were too that night on Roti.

ahh. thanks guys! great info!

My girlfriend might have the chance to head there for work, so I was scoping out the chance of kiting there. Doesn't sound too promising. Looking at the map, it seems that there would be better wind on the south coast, but I suppose that's not very well populated eh?

Looks like you had a fun trip regardless!!!

Hey lotawind, I am not in any of those photos, al tho one of them looks like my mate Huey ( back right hand corner), he was already there about two weeks when I rocked up.
Pretty sure a group of Aussies had just left when I arrived, because all I met were token Kiwis.

Sorry bra, although I really cant remember f@#k all of that trip after the chicken and goat bus rides through Timor.
