A couple of us for thinking about kiting as far as we can in a day on the way up to KiteStock but we need a ground crew to drive my X-Trail & jetski (WAKSA have asked for it as rescue @ KiteStock) - anyone willing to help out?

I was hoping to have a crack at the world distance record > 210km so will need to start well before Gero

Ian,
Gav here. I'll talk to work, maybe I can get the day off to ride on the jetski and be your support/rescue.

For a world record attempt, I'd be happy to assist.. I'll see if Heike has clients that day, maybe an x-trail driver who knows the terrain would also help.

Failing that, I know I can get Mick (rescue guy from the nationals) to follow you on his jetski. He knows that stretch of coast better than anyone I know.

Make sure you have some good contingencies in place, in particular comms. Gero to Horrocks is pretty slow in a 4wd being mostly heavy sand, there is a track from Horrocks to maybe 10k's north of Horrocks (past little bay) then it is all cliffs with no or sparse vehicular access through to Port Gregory.

Cars will need to head back to the Northampton - Kalbarri Rd.

Hopefully you are doing some good planning, dont want to hear about a rescue.

Thanks for that Dave.....I think I'll pass on doing that leg as the coast does look tough with the cliffs and all. Jet ski rescue boat sounds like good plan though, with radio of course.

Is it called Horrocks because........ the Rocks are Horrible?

Nick

I have added a Google Earth image of that stretch and see what you mean...don't want to be caught there after dark.

I was only bringing the jetski up as rescue for KiteStock on WAKSA's request.

Safety plan for distance record attempt is the same as what we did when we did the 120km Freo to Lancelin ie checkpoints where our ground crew make sure we haven't run into problems with contingency plans if we have.

I have been trying for the last two years to organize an official Guiness World Record attempt but it requires 2 independent observers to verify that no external assistance was received and that none of the official rules were broken. To achieve this we really need something like a cray boat to sit on 15 knots+ for 6-8 hours - a jetski is not suitable for many reasons. Unfortunately all attempts to date to get a suitable boat and sponsorship for the $1000+ return fuel bill have come to dead ends

Man Ian, what a bummer....isn't this the kind of thing The West Australian or some other local company could sponsor?

There would be beautiful pics of our wonderful coast.

I mean it is newsworthy as it is pretty out there....and positive to boot.

Cervants to Port G. is about 262 Km as the crow flys on Google Earth....that is a long way

Gruezi I would have thought so too - 18 months ago I thought I had a big fast boat and Gull providing the fuel but they renigged at the last minute I've written proposals to so many companies I've lost count It's all become too hard! I'd just love to have a crack at it - even if it doesn't count for any official record.

Besides it's awesome fun smacking wave after wave without having to tack back upwind; sprinting through the flat sections; exploring new breaks I've never seen before; cruising with dolphins, sharks, whales, rays, flying fish, etc. Even though we were very unlucky with bad weather on the Monkey Kites Great Aussie Downwinder http://www.thegreatdownwinder.com , it was still awesome fun Likewise the first run to Lancelin in Dec 2002 and the attempted Cape-to-Cape in Dec 2004 www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4158&SearchTerms=cape and www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4472&SearchTerms=cape

Hey Ian, you trying to get sponsorship for this record would sound like too much fun and every man's dream

Others have to get the sponsorship for you and sell you as a crazy man...now that's newsworthy, especially if you pull it off.

This really captures my imagination too.
I've spent countless holidays at Horrocks and wondered about what is out there past the line of waves crashing on the outer reef. I've seen enormous fish and sharks caught north and south of Horrocks. Just to add to Dave Whettingsteals comment, there's no way that a vehicle is going to drive along the rock/surf areas where there is no beach. Having a Cray boat following is an excellent idea but if you get near the outter reef I don't think there's any helping you. Also its pretty trecherous, you would just get pinned there.

Ian, I would love to watch you do it. You can borrow my shark shield. With a 4 our life though we might need an extra battery or two.

Ha Ha....nah the rocks are beautiful. Its named after Joseph Horrocks, a Northampton shop owner who built the Gwalla Church in Northampton as a 'place of worship for people of all faiths and denominations'.

It would be cool to do a dwonwinder from Horrocks to Port G., if the rocks are beautiful.

Hope there is wind soon........I'm melting.

This is not weather for humans.

I promise to tie it on better than the one I lost last year www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11984

Hi Ian,
Sounds like a great challenge. I would chip in $1,000 if it would help. You gave me a lesson a few years back. It would be cool to see you have a crack at it.
shoot me a mail.

Wow.....cool, now all you need is the cray boat and lots of wind of course.

What goes around comes around.

Hmmm....that Sunday is a day that the entire cray fleet takes a day off.
So theoretically there's a lot of boats not doing much and a lot who would take the whole weekend off. I bet 500.00 of that 1000.00 a trip up the coast following some guy on a kite would be attractive to them.

I mucked around with my C-MAP (electonic charting software)and for those who are interested...

Port Gregory jetty to the southern end of the lagoon is about 1.3nm (note 1nm radius). PG to Horracks ca. 15nm, whilst PG to Pt Moore is 40nm. Remember one nautical mile equals one degree of latitude or 1852 meters.

The 15-16th don't look hot for wind.........and that is what's needed. I feel that you are going to have to try and pick the windiest day in the week "window." It would be great to see the world record being brocken on the last day of Kitestock.....can just see it now.....big zepplin arrives on the horizon.

Good luck, I pray for wind.

Jeeze Gruezi you should know by now not to trust a forecast until the day before at earliest!

I get my students to ring me an hour before each lesson ... and even then I have been known to get it wrong - even with all the data in the world that Seabreeze provides - as well as my own real-time observations
