Has anyone had a crack at mountainboarding downwind on the beach.

A cheap mountain board goes for around $300.00. They would have to have less resistance than a board on the water, therefor I should be able to get my speed up quite easily. With less wind in SE QLD for the next few months, I thought this could work.

I figure I could get motoring in around 10knts on the beach at Double Island. As long as I can dodge all the 4X4s, I could do a 30km downwind trek for sure. Any comments on past adventures?

you will need a pretty low tide to keep the kite of the dunes.

careful of all the red neck 4by driver.

good luck

going down wind on hard sand is scary as you have to edge with out turning the board and you just go faster and faster until you hit a soft patch and die
kthxbye

this is me 2 years ago on a downwind mission where i had my longest walk of shame ever. but it was so much fun, its quite easy to slow down if the kite is high, all you do is turn the board sideways lean back slightly and it just slides accross the sand, felt abit like putting a rail in on a snowboard while riding on ice. try and get 1 with wider tyres to stop it sinking. i guss it would be eazyier for me being only 50kg. and make sure the springs can tighten because you will get speed wobbles easy with loose turning.

sorry don't know about 10 knots tho spook, if your going downwind it is hard to keep tention in the lines to stop the kite fron dropping, i was doing it in about 15 knots with a 7 meter kite. i lernt on the landboard befor i got into the water

Love your work snoidberg!!! I probably am dreaming about riding in 10knots. 15 knots minimum would be more like it. With a low tide at Double Island beach, I am going to have a crack. Will look for adjustable trucks on a board too, I reckon. I'm cool with a few speed wobbles but if they turn into death wobbles, then thats not so cool.

Cheers for the input.

Hey spookyluke12,

You can definately ride in less than 10 knots, just not downwind. Wait for an onshore day and go for it, provided the sand is hard packed it'll be ok. You should also let the tyres down a bit too to help with traction and point loading. You can do lots of nice big carvy S's to help load the lines and provide a little resistance to the rolling friction of the board.

Snoidberg is right, MBS have adjustable "egg shocks" to increase resistance to turning. Helps ease the speed/death wobbles.

Get into it, it's huge fun!

Good winds,
