i like the idea of a trust worthy wooden bar covered in resin and held together by rope.. especially the part without having knuckle guards so wen u fishpole the bar the lines chafe away on the top of ur hands..

Hee hee. Follow the instructions. Build the kite. I guarantee there will be NO fishpoling! There might be fish-trawling....or that fishy thing where they sluice litres of water through their mouths for plankton....

Suddenly I don't mind paying $1800 for a kite, in fact it seems cheap after reading that....The boards on the other hand, look sh1t hot and after reading the reviews handle even better. I'm starting mine today!

oh no they cant be serious! Macgyver eat your heart out mate, this guy has obviously been watching too much mythbusters or better homes and gardens. Me thinks that guy is headed for the darwin awards. He must really hate his job if he refuses to spend the same amount of time working, and earn the money to buy the kite made by the eperts.

i find the big carwash sponges work the best for comfort but they get a bit water logged and they might be too squidgy.. maybe if you use the kitchen sponges with rough layer on one side for extra grip?

I think i can safely say, he doesn't hate his job. He just likes to make stuff - nothing wrong with that.

FYI, Tim Anderson, the guy who built all this stuff is actually a mega-millionaire, retired by age 30 on royalties from some really cool inventions, mostly inspired by mucking around with other people's rubbish.

Wouldn't it be nice to get up every morning, do whatever you felt like (e.g., paddle an outrigger canoe from Florida to Cuba, or fly to Australia to go camping) or just go to wherever the wind was blowing -- just because you can?...

(and don't overlook the fact that most of this stuff was created between about 2000-2001, before a lot of kite companies had even invented decent safety releases. -- ever seen an Naish AR-5 or North Rhino 1 chicken loop?)

Hi Spacemonkey! and kiters, www.zeroprestige.org was around as a kite surfing design info hub way back before 2000 when there where very few kite companies around.

If you know anything about kite surfing you may recognize some names in one of his new companys working on renewable energy.

http://makanipower.com/griffith.html
Don Montague, Pete Lynn etc....

It is good to see an Aussie working on great projects.

About makanipower.com

In 2006, less than two percent of the world's energy consumption was supplied by renewable sources. One reason for this is the relatively high cost of producing renewable energy. Makani Power is seeking to harness high-altitude wind energy to produce energy at an unsubsidized real cost significantly below that of the least expensive coal-fired power plants, the current benchmark of the lowest cost source of power.

About zeroprestige.org:
Zeroprestige was an experiment in open source hardware i was involved in while a student at MIT. The principle characters were Eric Wilhelm, Tim Anderson, and myself, Saul Griffith, with frequent genius and CAD help from Axel Killian. MIT shut the server down that had the archive but the best bits can be found here:
