So, I was out two days ago on the bay heading back to shore about half a kilometer out coming back from a long tack. Going at a pretty good rate of speed. I feel this hit and loud knocking thump sending a shockwave through my surfboard. I look around and can't see anything that I have hit, and because it was so loud and threw me off balance I assumed it was a piece of driftwood. I get back to shore, land my kite and pick up my board and see a gash on the rail of my board. Except the gash is on the edge that was not in the water on the tack. And its deep. And it is the perfect shape of a dorsal fin. Whatever hit me was going at a pretty good rate of knots to leave a big slice on the rail that was about a third down from the nose so it would have for sure been out of the water. I could not see any dolphins around, (and I see them often and ride with them whenever they are around), so I can assume it was a very large fish with a big dorsal fin. When I went to repair the board yesterday I pulled some greyish black flesh out of the gash. Pretty sure it was a shark, but if anybody knows of any other fish that would have a strong dorsal fin and can penetrate a tough epoxy board please let me know. Very curious.

def not a turtle, the gash was a prefect dorsal of some description. I was thinking it could of been a wahoo or something like that too, very fast moving fish. Who knows, except whatever it was will be bruised! Makes you wonder though...

Ha ha! Not one of those either! Though some dugongs in the bay would be pretty cool!
Marlin perhaps, we do get them in the bay from time to time and Point Perp is the only place in the world where they catch Marlin off the rocks. Very plausible.
I guess the thing that is so amazing was that I was traveling at speed going in a north west direction. Whatever hit me was going at speed in a west norwest direction when it hit me. Either it was very unlucky for the unsuspecting fish, or it was on a highspeed investigation.
Board fixed now that I have had two days of no wind....

I have repaired the slice, if you want to come over I will show you...the crew saw it, we were all trying to figure out how it could have happened, and really you can think what you like. I am not here to create any myth, nor fear. I see plenty of sharks when I dive, I know they are there. 3 meter bullshark was cruising our spot last year. So what?
This was the most random thing ever and I was wondering if any other fish or maybe a seal could have done that kind of damage. Clean slice cracking through epoxy to the the core, lower part being wider than the top of the slice, very fin like. Just trying to unravel an interesting day.
