I don't kitesurf (yet) but was out trying to surf on Tuesday arvo at Wanda with my daughter...the wind was howling NE and I saw this kitesurfer who got what I thought was around 50m off the water...I was laughed at by some windsurfers when I suggested this.

The guy was the best I had seen in almost 10 years of watching kite surfers and the day itself was the windiest I had experienced down there myself in recent memory.

you're about to get a whole list of claimers- probably three pages worth.
just remember to take each one with a grain of salt, and subtract at least a third off the stated height, sometimes half.
this is going to be an entertaining thread...

lol...just like fishing...I guess it never happens unless the photo is there...I couldnt believe it but the guy was seriously good...I watch you guys a lot whilst surfing (jealousy perhaps).

I considered kiting but if there is something I can stuff up it will and I reckon it would all go pear shaped for me pretty quickly...plus if I was 30 years younger....

your imagining it, generally the biggest good kiters go is around 20 to 25 mtrs, using another kites height to guess these hights, or the shadow box, i read a while back the biggest jump was recorded at 76 ft for a kiter, and amazingly 65ft for a poley, it was mid to high 20s at our local with perfect little boosting ramps for the edge 9, the boys reckon i was getting some crazy height , is the an instrument that can give you an approx height, ive a mate in the uk that used to test for north and wipika , hes the biggest boosting kiter ive seen , one of the locals swears he jumped over his kite , it was blowing over 30 and he was on a 10mtr vegas at 80kgs max, i love the complete silence when you go big unreal feeling, stop watching and start kiting

Just start kiting man. Your never too old. at 41 i'm one of the youngest at my local!

But be prepaired for all other sports you do to pale into insignificance once you start ktiing.

Hey man, I don't know what the biggest air ever is, but here's a photo of Ewan Jaspan doing a pretty bloody decent jump:

Eddie "the eagle" Lansink - I reckon his jumps are around the 25-30M mark and are the biggest I've ever seen...

on a side note, Why is this so?

i'm ripping about in 4-5" mushy NEster ,picking the eyes out of whats on offer (cause i can)when a couple or more waxheads paddle there c@#t out to get out the back then proceed to snarl and yell abuse???

i never drop in or hog paddle boarders waves ,keep down wind or more than a kite lines length away when passing up wind ,jump or otherwise endanger and would be the first to assist if they or anybody needed it, yet there out in atrocious conditions carrying on like pork chops!

i don't want to upset the locals,as i'm one myself now, but there is only so many times i can grab my crouch and pull a chad morgan face before it gets old:-$

is it jealousy, or are they to mucho to be gay enough to kite ??

forgive me if i'm mistaken but i think i might have seen you out there and thought to myself, **** this guy is committed.
Good to see you out with your grom and getting them into it.

This is my opinion. (ill probably get slagged)
But doing big jumps isn't what its all about.
Ive kited Wanda about 10 times in the last 2 weeks and every time the surf has been horrible (in surfing standards) its been fun as hell on a kite.
Ripping fat, slow, or mushy waves is all that more satisfying when you know it would be junk on a surfboard.
Learn the kite, get a surfboard and blow your wave count out.

If your ever around, i'm more then happy to have a chat to you about it.
Look for the black van and the the guy with not board straps.

cheers

G'day beatlloydy,

I was kiting on Tuesday and did see a young fella ripping it up. Was good to watch thats for sure.

As Plummet and JBFletch said, all you can do is give it a go. You won't look back.

All the lads are easy going at Wanda so don't be afraid to say hello.

Cheers

Yes....my daughter is only 7 but keen as mustard for surfing and her first comp in December (Wahoo Surfgroms at Cronulla) so we try and go out in all conditions to 6" slop up to 4' and get smashed (I help her duckdive)....its all about trying to be prepared for all conditions..I am just stoked about her being stoked so its all good.

Re Kiteboarding tho: I cant speak for other surfers but I am getting jack of surfing in sydney a little myself, hence spending more time with the little un....It has to be the most hedonistic sport (1 person, 1 wave) whereas with say Kite or windsurfing there is room to share by virtue of the fact of more manouverability.

My take on all the users of the ocean (surfers, spongers, windsurfers, bodysurfers) is (most) times I try and keep an open mind and dont knock what others are doing.....a bit like Racism....its not necessarily the RACE or SPORT people are/indulge in...its the individual...if they are a good person (easy to get on with) then thats fine...if they are a wanker then it doesnt matter what sport they do...they still are wankers But I cant stand PWC's

You a correct in estimating he jumped 50 metres high. I consistently jump well over 50m high, the key is yelling out BOOOOOOST just on take-off.

I was out just before 3pm today, it was around or a bit over 25kts, maybe gusting towards 30. The stars aligned and I got a perfect launch off a 3ft bay swell in a gust, sent my Edge 11. I yelled 'holey f***amoley' at the sheer elevator action. I then spent the next few minutes wondering where that phrase came from because I've never said that expression my life. Biggest jump I've done in at least 2-3 years.

Felt like 50m, but I'd be happy if it was 15m

btw why flirt with us if you're really buying windsurfing gear? You know you'll just be windsurfing and watching the kiters jump 50m high. Why postpone the inevitable - just start kiting instead!

My fave kite is the 11 edge out of my edge quiver, if you flick it around from 11 to 1 as you reach full height it gives you a secondary lift, but you've gotta be fully lit,
