Im in the market for a new light wind board

It has to be a twin tip, not a race board or surfboard. Don't really care what brand, and price isn't too much of a worry.

I want to be able to get up and going in 10knots + but still have some good jumping ability and pop

Have been looking at Axis Ultra, Naish Orbit, Crazyfly Cruiser, Shinn king gee. What are peoples/shops thoughts and opinions?

Dunno about those boards. I had a custom made by Cardboards some years ago and it rips in light winds and is ok in stronger winds (but a little bit skatey when the wind gets up).

135x48cm. Moderately stiff. Minimal rocker. Straps on the centre line, minimal fins.

You want planing area under your feet where it counts.
Avoid rocker. Rocker is slow and sucks power.
Avoid length and flex. A long board flexes and that makes rocker and rocker is slow.
Avoid too much finnage. Fins create drag and drag is slow....
Avoid offsetting the straps to the heel side. That edges too much. Creates drag and imbalance. Slow...

I purchased (for full retail$) a Litewave Wing 153. Love it - I'm 95kg and can get going on a 12m in 13/14kns, any less I'm using a 15 with line extensions down to the point where it won?t fly.

One of the guys at our local with a specific light wind kite rides one with about 8kn - my 15m kite is too heavy

It has fins, bit of rocker, quite a bit of flex and a lot of length, so according to many it shouldn't work, but it does - very well.

Surfconnect. He had a 161 for demo too when I tried them. IMO there's bugger all difference between the 161 and 153 as far as getting going, of all the light wind boards I tried, the Wing is the only one that doesn't feel like a big plank.

Axis Ultra is very good... had one for two weeks this summer.

You didn't say how much you weigh or how low you want to go.

Flyboards Flydoor XL is one of the best ultra low wind TTs but like all monster doors is a big board to throw around.

I used my Ocean Rodeo Origin as a lighter wind TT as it was still fun, but it doesn't have the ultimate bottom end and when the wind picks up it is, like all wide boards, a bit dull.

depends on what you want to do, mow grass theres heaps out there, if you want to throw in a few jumps and tricks without feeling like your lining a 747 to land, then the king gee or speedball w18 are worth trying, check out some videos of the big door boards compared to the king gee in action, I know what id rather be doing

Also worth considering the Nobile XTR 143 by 48. The footpads are offset to the heel side so when edging its like being on a 44cm board, but you have the 48 to get going or keep planing. Its the light wind version of the NHP so planes early and goes upwind well.

This is one with a 13m crossbow and he quotes 7 to 12 mph (mph from his other video that day).

Sorry about that, im 80kg and looking to be able to go down to 10knots on a 17m

I still want to have a bit of fun on it around the 12 knots mark not just mowing the grass. I have a few different boards but nothing designed for the light stuff, which is insanely frustrating when other people are out and im sitting on the beach praying for the wind to pick up.

Im getting myself a Zephyr shortly for all that sub 17knot stuff, at the moment my biggest kite is a 12m Sculp, but going through the process of updating all my boards for specific jobs, light wind, general freestyle and wakestyle (the last two i know what im updating too just need to get the lightwind board sorted). amazing what a difference a board can make to your wind range.

Righto, well here's some comparative information for you.

My brother rides the zephyr and he's about 77 to 79kg, slightly lighter than you. He has a 145 by 44 crazy fly all round board. Now he can just stay upwind in 10 knots, without current on flat water...to be quite honest he wouldn't bother and he has some light wind voodoo going on that guy, so if you want down to 10...this gets harder. You are really getting into the need for a very efficient board ...eg sector, nugget, large SB...

At 12 he's doing okay, can throw some stuff down but not a great deal, but staying upwind in a reasonable fashion. 13 up he's in his element, then by 15 changing down board size u p to 20 knots then it's kite change time. But he does like to be powered so take that into consideration. He could be on his 136 by 41 raptor pro at 13/14 if he so wished.

From this, I recon you are looking for at least something 46 wide, but no wider than 48 if you want to 'get busy'. Another guy I ride with has a 48 and he's a really powered rider who likes all that darkslide etc jazz, and he wouldn't go any wider.

So then it's down to length and rocker, and overall outline. I run a crazy fly cruiser pro, 145 by 44 at 74-75kg, which is reasonably square in outline and not a great deal of rocker. But the length does give it enough flex. The all round is a little rounder in outline and has more rocker and is definetly more comfortable but not as good for load and pop.

Anyhow not vouching for any boards or kites in particular just giving you some kind of yardsticks to add into your decision making mix. Hope this helps along with other useful information here, except for freeze of course.

Thanks for that Eppo, a lot to think about and go through!

Plummet, how much does a board like that cost to make and how much time does it take? I'm thinking I don't have the room at home or free time for that sort of commitment at the moment, I would like to in a couple of years though!

Patrol isn't a 2014 board... Ultra is full carbon and replaced it this year. IIRC since I got my Limited I have just forgotten everything Adrian said, cos I was too happy riding it
