i am a pretty keen observer of the weather ,as we all are ,look at at a truck load of sites and have a laymans understanding of some of the modelling ,Qscat scans etc
i generally don't have a bone to pick with the bureau as i am acutely aware of the variations that happen with the weather due to local topography etc yada yada...
locally we get some big variations in wind strength even over distances of 8-10 kms but after not having a kitesurf for over a month and with a bit of expectation of getting at a run or 2 in .....i am of the firm belief that in winter the the boffins go north for a nice break and the bureau lets the work experience kids write the forecasts
didn't even break 10 knots .....tragic

the forecast for saturday

what actually happened

Your screen shot captures from late afternoon till overnight. The forecast time was last updated when. If it was a morning forecast then, your actual forecasts dont include.

Tell me when do you think a westerly would ever be predictible in the eastern states. I think if they get within 10 knots of a westerly, then that is. Pretty accurate forecast.

Hi Prawnhead,

I think your just a bit tooooo far west 320nm east of you we are having awesome wind & is expected to be kiting all week! Unfortunately no fishing this week. Huge swell expected all week at Lord Howe. Had a great session today and out again tomorrow.

Check out windy point Lord Howe Observations.

they read bottom up 5.00 am to 5.30.pm and you would imagine if your are predicting up to 25knots you might just get a puff above 10 ..i am still a fan of the BOM and their site and no-one can accurately predict exactly what will happen ....anyway they are predicting up to35 knots today ..may even get a run in
don't rub it in davo i look at it every day and dream!!! cheers mate

When are you gonna tell us you bought a new kite / board?

[read the BOM fineprint - exclusions also include weddings, BBQs, significant birthdays, etc etc]

If your local BOM only lets the work experience kids take control during winter then have some sympathy with Hervey Bay QLD kiters. Our predominant winds during the season are SE's. Unfortunately we have a large mass just offshore called Fraser Island which breaks up sooo many predicted SE's. I would conservatively estimate that over half of the predicted 20-25 SE's aren't even kiteable, seriously. I've lost count of the number of days I've pencilled in a kite and stared in frustration as the readings fail to get above 12knts.

I wouldn't be so hard on urself, we just all super keen to get on the water

Just gota give the ligament time to heal so will be off the water for a bit and not allowed to do anything that might break the temp screws that I have till about early september.
I am planing on a gentle cruise around our local spot on 20-8-2011 @ 10am

so bom predict 20kn and you get 10 boohoo. Last night bom predicted a possible 40 to 50kn offshore but the oil and gas boats recorded a max 100kn (yep thats almost 200km/hr). So they get it wrong and we could easily have an oil tanker or two spread over the ningaloo reef. Slightly more concerning than someone going to the beach and missing a session on the kite.
Pretty typical though with all the tourists up here for the school holiday's.
