If someone asked to borrow my pump I'd be "no problem, mate" without exception. However, getting in and finding my pump tossed haphazardly in the sand next to my bag, after packing it away carefully with everything else before I went out, pisses me the **** off.
Have a civil tongue in your head and ask, you know? And treat it with a little respect.
I agree, I don't mind lending my pump, sometimes you forget your own, or say when I was in Melbourne at the beginning of the year, I had to catch the tram to the beach, on a couple of occasions, so I left the pump at home, one less thing to carry. But, I never used a pump without asking, and I always put it back in the guys bag!
Most of the kite company pumps are pretty robust, but like most gear, sand seems to be the killer, so I definitely wouldn't be happy if someone borrowed my pump and dumped it in the sand with the intake hole buried!
I think lending gear and helping each other out, keeping an eye out for people in trouble is what makes the sport special. I've even had the guy who runs the kite school at Halying Island here in the UK lend me a bar because one of my lines snapped in a tangle!
