Very sad news RIP our ocean loving brother.

This is getting crazy, you have to wonder what is attracting all of these whites lately.
I know they have always been around but speaking to a few crayfishermen I know up at Lancelin who have fished for years up there, they reckon they have never seen as many as this year.

I gave directions to some friends on how to get here on Thursday and they got there today for a surf. Luckily did not make it in, I had a guilty conscience until I got word from them. Brings back the whole shark debate but seriously when do we take action?

Perhaps the Japs would like to carry out some scientific research on these sharks (fins) and let us know there findings, say 2020.

Liam's just done a interveiw with channel 7 about his encounter with the bronzeeee, not to sure how it went as he's in melbourne, it looked like the same location and this very sad news brought back some horrible feelings.

Sad when people die. But really, shark finning is not a laughing matter.

These tragic events are becoming alarmingly frequent. Very sad. I know it's their environment, not ours, but since when has that been an impediment for humans to act. My heart goes out to those involved.

Hey Ryland, if we are gonna "take a few out", why don't we take a few fishermen out? These events are happening due to the sole fact that our waters are being "gutted" and there is becoming nothing left for the sharkies to feed on when there traveling up an down the coast.
Let's look at it this way,
About a hundred years ago (for example), how many tonnes of fish were pulled from the ocean each year?
In current times, how many thousands of tonnes of fish are pulled from the ocean daily?

sad news , but we better get used to it as attacks will increase, its nature every animal needs to feed , less fish in the ocean means less food and less sea lions staple diet of the white, a surfer in a wettie looks similar, if you take note nearly all humans attacked arnt eaten, where sea lions are , so mistaken food source, as for it hitting tourism , itll attract more internationals due to the appeal of going somewhere wild and rugged , if you want proof of how many fish are being pulled out of the ocean you only need to stand on the beach with a rod in your hand or take a boat out , its a fair bit different now than a few years back,

A few mates also had a close call in Greenough after the Drummonds sighting last week. I used to be 100% against killing GW sharks... Today I was thinking to myself "it's only a matter of time till someone I know gets taken"

That's what fear does, it's F"@&$ with your head.

As horrible as the thought is, there is a little bit of truth in the matter.

The Government, I don't think will act, unless (touch wood) a child gets taken. Then I think it would be a free for all- kill 50 of them to look good in the public eye.

I think we have sort of passed a tipping point with the increased whale population and mass fishing. The GW's are here to stay.

Condolences to the family.

Condolences to the family and to the guy's mates who saw it go down. Commendation to the ski rider who risked his own life trying to save the guy. Nobody should have to see or do what he did.
As a surfer for over 30 years and kitesurfer for the last two, I have never been rattled by the thought of sharks, until now.

I have spent the last two years teaching my daughter to surf, so she too can enjoy the lifestyle and freedom that I have had, but watching the news yesterday made me think about what if we were out together and either of us got hit......?

Either a daughter seeing her father attacked, or a father seeing a daughter attacked. Absolute devastation for either party.

Cannot believe I am even entertaining the thought of not taking her with me for a while, but I can't get the thought of her being taken out of my mind.

Anyone else had these thoughts?

The incident at Wedge is tragic and my condolences to his family and friends.

Media responsibility has taken another blow this weekend. The incident obviously raises a heap of questions about culling GWS's but that's an issue for later when emotions have calmed down.

I'm really unimpressed with the local media, especially online. Perthnow (aka the Sunday Crimes) should hang their heads in shame with the completely unnecessary and sensationalist imagery of a GWS with jaws wide open as their 'front page' photo. Irresponsible, insensitive, un-necessary.

Watoday issued photos & named the guy, despite his family's request for privacy - unbelievably insensitive and irresponsible.

TV stations interviewed witnesses & broadcast way too much info y'day IMO, given the family request.

Poor form from all.
