I've dug out a couple of 05 fuels I had in the garage, the kites are in great nick except for some leaks. Not sure what caused them, pretty sure the kites were ok when I used them last, maybe the glue has gone off? Anyway I'm looking to fix the leaks so they'll be useful again. Most bladders are losing pressure but it appears to only be coming out from around the valves.

Is there a common problem with the old valves and what's the best way to fix these . I assume you can purchase just the valve part and glue it on? What glue, how do i prepare the surface first etc?

05's were notorious for this. Just buy a valve replacement, about $20 I think. Preparation etc all explained. Self adhesive backs on them. They work no dramas.

I fixed up all the valves that were leaking on my '05 Fuels by re-ironing the valves.
I did have to replace the dump valve on one of them with a stick on, but the rest just needed a little work.

Buy Aquaseal or something similar and glue them back on.
The glue just degrades over time.

sweet, thanks for the info guys

I think the problem is with almost every bladder, where the one pump tube connects it's coming unstuck. I'll give the Aquaseal a go and possibly the ironing if needed as $24 a pop would be a bit expensive for every strut on the old kites

You can't successfully glue them back on. Buy the adhesive backed stick on valves for about $20 a pop, very simple and effective, comes with alcohol wipes to prep surface. I've just done a couple recently and apparently having your kites stored in a hot place can ruin the valve to bladder seal; which I'd believe because I had my kites on my roof rack in the Pilbara summer before it happened.

Yes you can stick them on with glue. I have repaired a number of valves this way. The $20 valves are a joke. I've heard of a number of them coming off...so much so that the manufacturers don't offer warrenty on them anymore.

The key to sticking them on is to use a good glue (i used tarzans grip) and have a system where you can weight the edges of the valve well. I don't do weights, and hence don't have a dumbell but some of my mates have used these (so that the valve sits in the hole and the edges are weighted). You get the idea though, have a hunt around your house for something.

The other important point is the prep. Give the area a really good clean with acetone. Then tape the bladder down onto a book or something so that its held really flat, it tends to shrivel up as soon as you add the glue. Add glue to both the bladder and the valve as the glue instructions say. Leave a little margin around the hole so you don't stick the insides of the bladder together accidentily.

goodluck ; )

Ok, I might do some research on the right glue to use. Sure the $24 valves would be a better option but really $200 is not worth spending on these kites. Thanks for the tips

Same, fixed 3 leaky valves on mine with Aquaseal and they held quite nicely. I asked the nice man in Bunnings which glue he recommended and he said the Aquaseal for sure, but there are probably more suited ones.
