Any suggestions for a side trip from singapore for the weekend?
KL is pretty cheap to get to and stay but I could go anywhere. Malaysia has cheap shopping I spose. DOn't have any real desire to do anything but thought I should be making most of work trip over there. Seen heaps of singapore.
Dunno what I want to do. Thought of going to Kuala Rompin in Malaysia sailfishing but its not cheap esp as I am by myself. Might just come home unless I can think of something nice. Been to phuket for a weekend and didn't rate it. Not interested in sleazy nightlife. Natural beauty I guess. Underwater or maybe oranguangs? Sabah? Dont want to get kidnapped or drugged etc. Indonesian islands from Singapore?
Hi, I've lived in KL for 2 years.. If i wasn't back in Aus for uni i'd show you around. It's a nice city center to look around in, and shopping is abundant - although the top brands aren't all that much cheaper.
If you do go there and you're into fishing, check out the tackle shops for some great bargins (Rapala, Sebile, Yo-Zuri lures are all at least half price.. you can find good deals on shimano reels etc).
A bit further away in thailand is Koh Phangan, a fantastic island to explore on a rented motorbike if your into that sort of thing, plenty of natural beauty there and good food.
Can't really comment on the Sabah side, but have heard there's a bit of turmoil. Maybe could climb Mt Kinabalu if your fit and up for an adventure.
Even further away in Vietnam is Sapa.. a truly amazing place.
Just a few ideas anyway. Feel free to message me for info or ideas ![]()
For a weekend away Malacca cheap and very interesting for it's old colonial (Portugese???) buildings. Gluttons Market at the port has really good and cheap food.
For more up market I have heard that Tioman Island is excellent.
Could go to Nikoi island but its a bit boring maybe. Avoid Bintan and Batam though. Bintan is hands down the worst place i've been. There's 5 days of my life i'll never get back.
I'd go with Borneo or sailfishing though!
Contrary to above poster, find out wind forecast for Bintan and pop over to Mana Mana for windsurfing. I think Jan-Feb was their season. But make sure there's wind first!
Gee, from Singapore you've got the while of South East Asia a short flight away.
Personally I looooove Siem Reap and Angkor. Have been four times over the past sixteen years.
Or....flight to Koh Samui and scuba off Koh Tao (check the season). Flight to Kota Bahru and bus/boat to the Perhentians - scuba, snorkel, chill. Flight to Labuan Bajo and go to Komodo Island for dragons, hiking, scuba, snorkel, chill. Flight to Lombok and hang at the Gili Islands. Flight to HCMC and go up to (Mui Ne) Full Moon Village for windsurf (check season). Flight to Kuching and see orangutans, caves, tribes. Flight to Padang and hit the Mentawais.
Endless choice. Can't go wrong!
thanks for the ideas guys. The walk up the mountain looks good but I would have needed to have been doing some exercise perp and Im going in two weeks and pretty unfit. It's not normally something I would consider and I might see if I can do it next time (I go to singapore a bit)
will check them all out. the sailfishing is meant to be awesome (strangely) protected by royal decree in malaysia and an aggregation point. but I have found with things like that they are never cheap. It's an odd value system that you can get a prostitute all night for $20 USD (Not that I would, just what someone mentioned) and yet to go out on a leaky dodgy timber boat for a couple of days will cost over $2k
Nah. Only what I have been told about batam. Which is indon but similar. Just weird you can drink, eat, catch taxis for peanuts. But try and dive or go fishing and out comes the wallet.
