~9000m for 45 minutes, without gear and just a little frost bite on the cheek & ear???
Even 10mins @ 7km with wind chill would be a miracle.

With cloud suck (or even lip sucking) the vario can be quite inaccurate... amazing in any case.

With a 1 degree temp drop every 100 metres, at 10 kms up it would be 90 degrees colder than on the ground ( on a 30 deg C day it would have been minus 70 degrees plus wind chill ). I agree, a vario in an extreme low pressure system couldn't be trusted but not to say she wasn't lucky to make it . That was some pretty extreme editing as well.

with a scare like that, i bet that farm produced some tough steaks for the next few weeks

I remeber the story breaking t the time and wondered if they embelished with the details.

Chanced accross the story on Aunty and was (despite a pretty stodgy production) riveted. So many get out of jail passes for that lass it is incredible.

The unlucky Chinese bloke that copped the lightning strike a short distance away was sh!t outta luck tho.

Caught the Bagooki story also. Pretty enthrawling too.

Boy did he get a bum rap from the press.. not to mention the CH 9 tossers effectively pizzing off with him for an exclusive re-enactment (instead of directing him straight to medical help).

Some good teev that doesn't involve cooking out there after all.

Yer it was really amazing how high ,,,,,,, infact it rated on of the most increabiable survival stories ever especially with all the suporting GPS data recorded.

But is it as good as MAGOOKIE going walk about and surviving in the desert.

Hmmm.. It's hard to say. Only a met with local knowledge of Manilla could hazard a guess. That 1C per 100m you are talking about sounds like the dry adiabatic rate. It won't apply in storm clouds.

Yeah, your right, in cloud it cools at half the rate and with all the vertical air currents it would be hard to know how cold she got, but I know I still wouldn't want to be there.
