I think you'll find Kuta Beach is in Bali and Lombok is a whole different island.

Nope. There's a Kuta in Lombok, too. And much less commercialised. Tripadvisor.com is a good place to get the low-down and look for the reviews that match your circumstance (e.g. family with young kids, etc.)

Novotel is ok for families your near waves but its twenty minutes to kuta area by car. There is a couple waves walking distance ( real close) but wind can affect them. It's a fair bit pricier than other options but is easily comparable to top end resorts in bali. Been a couple years since I been, toucan get a Bemo with driver for 50 bucks a day, try find a guy who surfs or knows where to go cause it makes it heaps easier. I always ask what breaks they know how to get too. When they say somewhere you haven't heard of its generally worth a look. Food is pretty good in lombok, mind you there's a lot more Muslims than bali so bacon is best eaten at hotels. Hope this helps what time of year you go will also affect wave scoring potential and it pays to do some further research

thanks razzonater, queen bee has just booked us in to that novotel by coincidence this morning. looking at july for a few days. she got a good deal including transport and brekky, afternoon tea for a good price as well.
we picked up tix for 129 each way from perth late last year so its good to know it has come together. i need a break. not keen on bali anymore so time for a change.
thanks again.

Last I was there, the army had started coming in to clear the cafes off the beach side of Kuta and things a like. Concrete was beginning to be laid around the area as if ready for commercial buildings. Still a great place and the vibe and friendliness of people there is so good. Be careful if you are scootering around at night as it can be dangerous. Make sure to check a few of the beaches around that area as it's pristine white sand, glassy teal clear blue water sitting under dried coconut leave huts with many a times only you out.

Definately find a knowledgable guide - plenty of good bays to surf from that you can simply take a boat out to from the village and if you pay extra, other side of bays can surprise you with a wave or two
