or omnivore?

I think if you eat meat like an American then the video is probably fair... a small amount of a varied amount of meat in your diet does get you nutrition that is hard (but not impossible) to get on a veggie diet.

When people make a life changing switch like he has, they tend to look more carefully at what they eat so their before and after comparisons are less meaningful. In this case, he went from a lazy meat eater's diet to a concerned vegetarian's diet.

How do people feel about eating Kangaroo? I'm getting through about two packs a week of the Coles marinaded stuff. It seems to be better for the environment (they don't fart and they don't wear away grass in fragile climates because they don't have hooves), tasty and healthier too.

GP, I agree I think it gets back to something my dad always told me growing up. "Everything in moderation" with the food pyramid adhered to. I think most of us were taught that at school, and that says vegetables and cerials should make up the largest portion of anything on our plate. How many people these days can look at their dinner plate and say that's true? Sure some could, but it seems the trends are awa from that.

I am a hardcore vego myself, I do eat eggs from my chickens and sometimes fish but I love animals and could never eat one, I love trees too and would also never eat one.

we try to base our diet on what could be termed oportunistic omnivore, atleast 90% of our diet is vegetarian; eggs from our chickens, veges & fruit from our (and nieghbours) garden, fish from our fisho friends
(today best mate caught a four foot tuna while fishing out on his kayak, just got back from his tale of two hour man versus beast story of the sea, the best part was when he was making his way home from about three kay out with a big tuna balanced on his kayak when he thought a shark was stalking him, turned out to be a cuttlefish bone floating on end).
the opportunistic part comes from bbqs at my brothers or roasts at the missus mums house or the lazy nights hamburgers from harry's.

I was born with canine teeth, a single stomach and a lower intestine that has evolved to digest meat.

Hence I eat meat.

If I had been born with molars instead of canines, 7 stomachs and a digestive system evolved to handle cellulose I would eat grass.

If I had been born with baleen and two blow holes I would eat krill (and be eaten by Japanese scientists)

If I had been born a dung beetle I would eat ****

disclaimer : yes, I know I was actually born with a body that has evolved to be an omnivore, not solely a carnivore, but I'm sure you get my point.

Then I must be a sort of soft and limp vego, more training do I need to reach 18th vegan level.

is everyone struggling with realising Trev was making fun of vego's... at least that's how my intellectually superior but possibly paranoid vego brain read it.

I'm vegan number 5.

ps carantoc.. you need to continue the evolution mannnnn. The ethical evolution dude. If I had similar anatomy to a cave man but billions of food choices at my finger tips I would no longer need to eat meet to survive. I would also be slightly less inclined to club women over the head in an attempt to get them back to my cave.. But hey, what ever does it for ya.

Yeah - like are some vegetables closer to animals than others? Hardcore vegetarians bypass some vegies as they are not vegie enough?

This thread reminds me of a mate of mine once who looked at a plate of salad and said "that's not food - that's what food eats...."

it's in line with his soy latte comments a while back...

but there are hardcore vegetarians apparently

Besides, it's got nothing to do with evolution anyway. Evolution is purposeless. "Survival of the fittest" is meaningless because it means "survival of the one best adapted for survival"... in short, you can't argue ethics or any sort of purpose from evolution, because evolution is just a complex theory for explaining and describing what happened up to now.. you can explain behaviour and our in/ability to adapt to our current environment.

believe it or not its more difficult to grow a tomato than it is to grow a cow, i eat both and in most cases try to eat what i grow. if the consumer knew the amount of nasties they put into growing food now days so the consumer has a blemish free orange, carrot, insert what ever veggie ya want........ they would probably take their chance on a steak n salad burger without the salad , fair enough is you don't eat meat because it was a living animal... never had problem shooting what i eat either... each to their own, just don't swallow the "veggies are better for you" rubbish, unless you self grow.. its probably more carcinogenic with all the fungicides and chemicals they use.

^^ Sorry, someone had to post it

Seriously though, for those interested in nutrition, have a read of "in defense of food" (Michael Pollan). The ideas in the book make sense (to me anyway).

Can be summed up... "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants"

There you go, a lifelong guideline for nutrition in seven words

Did you know on abc widlife programs they now have a viewer warning message " it may contain animals eating other animals" is this to protect children viewers , I'd think they would be too busy fragging in doom on the ps3 or something to watch a nature doco , what's next gardening australia viewer warning about potential ants being treadon on, woo to be an ant! Poor bastards are trodden on 24/7 I bet!

Vegetarians and vegans are not the same things, there is a Simpsons involving a dude who is some mega vegan, I couldn't recall the quote exactly.

Yep. I think the quote is something about being a vegan number 5 which means you don't eat anything that casts a shadow. Keeps me pretty lean ;)

I had a dilema when I was younger. I was at a get togther and the discussion was animal crewelty. One person said that they can't stand it while chomping down a steak.

I htought about this for a while and came to the conclusion that if you can't go out and kill an animal, watch it die, cut it up and cook it, then what gives you the right to eat meat?

to overcome this I went out, killed a couple animals (not at the same time, that would just be silly) chopped them up and ate them.

I now eat meat guilt free knowing that I'm happy in the fact that yes, I can kill to eat.

So the motto for me is:

If you can't kill it yourself, you've gt no right to eat it.

What are all the veggies going to do if the scientists discover that plants have feelings too!

Did you run the animal down, pounce on it, clamp onto it with your sharp claws and bite through it's neck with your massive canine teeth?

I either shot (broadside), dogged or caught by hand and killed. I've got no issues with killing an animal for food, or eliminating vermin.

As is my wont, I am going to sit on the fence for this one.

It takes a lot to convince a vegetarian that meat is good, just as it is difficult to convince an omnivore that it is not healthy to eat meat.

The "standard" food pyramid... http://www.thenaturalway.com.au/foodpyramidpop.html
is considered by many to be upside down
www.getzoned.com.au/what_foods_are_in_the_zone.html

Diet should not be about winners and losers, it should be about what works for each individual. For every piece of research showing the virtues of vegetarianism, I bet I can find research that shows the opposite.

I have seen diets that extol low fat, low carb, low protein, low sugar blah blah blah. Can they all be right?

There is no concensus even among dieticians about what comprises a healthy diet, I have my own regime that I choose to follow (only for the last 4 months I admit, before that I lived on a rich and varied diet that included all the major fast food options ;-) ), but respect others right to choose their own diet.

What is the infatuation with beating anyone with an opposing view into submission?
