whats the best way to get free music on my phone? I am cancelling my google play subscription and i dont think theres a way i can keep all the content. (need rooted phone etc) I think spotify might be slightly easier with a paid app, so I could join, download a heap of stuff, convert then cancel. but there has to be an easier way. It was easier in the good ol days with limewire etc. I have searched pirate bay in the past for music but it didn't seem all that good. what does everyone else do? Just pay? $18 a month for the fam and none of us use it that often - because its a work phone I cant stream data in the car which limits my enjoyment

Since signing up I have deleted my whole pirated music collection which was in the order of gigabytes.

yeah google play music is 17.95 per month for the whole family. I think it will be good value when my kids get a bit older. But not so sure right now. I've tried both and i found google play had more stuff than spotify, better interface, good radio etc. but its what you get used to as well
Why would you bother "stealing" music nowadays?
I have Spotify Premium and it costs me around $120 per year. Gives me access to everything I need, current and past. Putting that into context, I the "old" days I would by a cd or two per month at around $30 each. Hence $60 per month and then I had to contend with many songs on an album that I didn't like. So essentially $700 + per month.
So approx. $10 per month is not even going to get you a pint of beer.
Got an email from Spotify stating I had listened to over 68 000 minutes of music. In the grand scheme of things that is cheap entertainment plus I don't listen to adverts or the @#@$ that call themselves radio dj's.
Just pay up champ, essentially there is no such thing as free music. 
ive bought under 20 albums in my life. - closer to ten but i did buy a few tapes when i was young. and zero movies, not one movie cd or cassette ever. I use my old man's netflix login. I dont like to pay.
If you think about it, subscription services give you more than just music. Playlists, suggestions, new releases, radios etc. I'm on spotify premium too and since I signed up I have found so many songs by artists I have never even heard off just based off the type of music i listen to. And for $12 a month it's pretty cheap.
It's just not worth the effort to try to get the same music free.
I like spotify premium for the family (2 teenagers) I was big into the torrent music for the ease of it as well as being pretty cheap but at $17 a month or there about its near on $15 a month less than what I used to spend on CD's for myself in the younger days.
You can download music to your phone to listen to while out of range or do on wifi if not wanting to use data.
If you can't afford it setup a go fundme page and post a link mate.
I'm packing up to move house at the moment, and wondering what to do with my 200+ CD's (plus a few boxes of vinyl)? Worth keeping, or do I just succumb to the technological evolution and sign up to a streaming service? Would all my music be available on Spotify? (Screaming Tribesman, Lime Spiders, Hitmen, Naked Lunch, etc....basically the Sydney live music scene in the 80's)
Not all music is on spotify. TOOL for example. Which is a shame. But if you have your own music you can include it in your spotify playlists etc.

Because it is still so quick and easy to do and why would you pay for something when its available for free? Well not free because i pay for the internet and unless you're watching live sport i can't even see why people pay for pay tv?
I've only ever bought one album or song on (an old school CD no less!) in my life (John Butler trio's first album) but hundreds of thousands of us have illegally downloaded every Eminem album and the bloke's still worth $200M so it cant hurt them too much

Yep Deezer is ok.
But if you want free music on your phone that you can play without needing wifi I have an answer!
Get a decent SD card from the phone shop. Go to a website called MP3 Juices. Types in any band you want plus 'full album' in the search. Download it, and add it to a folder you create for music on your SD card. Create a shortcut to the folder on your homescreen. Play the files anytime you like without chewing through data.
It does have it's limitations, however is pretty awesome for a tightwad like me who wants to download music to phone.

Because at the end of the day, most of the artists that I listen to are not mainstream and I would dare say would be lucky to earn a massive income from their trade. A mate of mine is an Indie artist and earns a few hundred dollars from Spotify every few months. He deserves to be paid for what he does and it is his career.
What you're referring to is only a small percentage of the market and agreed these people earn ridiculous sums of money. But to me does not justify stealing music.
At the end of the day if that's how you justify your actions then good luck to you.
I personally love the convenience of Spotify and am more than happy to pay for the service. Spending time illegally trawling for sites that may have free music would be a PITA.

wierd concept that you want to get someone's music (their job) for nothing. I just do not get it. Imagine telling the plumber you downloaded their job from another site so no you will not pay.
pandora was awesome but Spotify does the job. Apple Music is hard work. Pity Pandora closed down in aus

Yes.
its immoral and illegal and NOT victimless which is the reason I don't do it.
You probably think there is no harm in throwing a coke can out the window, sitting above the speed limit and checking your phone in the car because you can, or making dodgy tax claims because it doesn't hurt anyone, but whinge when roads or government benefits aren't up to scratch, or education funding gets cut.

What if people are downloading media just to justify their purchase of technology, and not really listening/watching it?
What if a producer or distributor is taking 90% of the profits, and piracy is increasing the audience?
I'm not for or against piracy, I'm just saying the right/wrong equation isn't as clear cut as some might think it is.
So if not paying your taxes creates more advanced roads...
