i brought a tig inverter welder , i know how to weld but have never used a tig before but understand how it works, except it seems that the earth can be positive which i have never seen before is the normal for a inverter welder . i dont want to kill it first time out . the instructions it comes with are in chinglish and make no sense . any info would be a great help

you can invert it the use of using the positive on the gun is you get a higher penetration unless you are getting your welds xrayeds for codes for pressure vessels petro chem industry etc there would be no advantage to using it. I think coded welders would argue with different types of materials for the polarity. I dont think you would need to take the welder to that level. Is it single phase?Dont be scared of it it will just trip your rcd out ever 5 min. Should of bought a MIG!
what are you trying to fabricate?

just connect the earth lead up to a positive earth and you should have no problems. make sure you are putting argon thru your welder.

I have an inverter tig welder too. Weld with +earth for steel in DC, and for aluminum in AC.

If you use - earth on most welding, you'll smoke the tungsten.

Only time I know of that -earth is used is for super thin/very low power on steel. Beer can thin stuff; when you need the heat to go to the tungsten instead of the metal you're welding.

Have fun, post pics of the project!

Enjoy your tig Its my weapon of choice when welding Your DC inverter will do
steel stainless steel but not aluminium you need AC for that
Positive earth for Tig Negative for stick welding as mentioned above

make sure you have the correct tungsten. you want thoriated or ceriated for DC welding and the tip needs to be sharpened to a point.

you should run about 8mm stickout with the electrode

with your inveter you will have to 'scratch' start the arc so be careful it doesn't stick or you will need to keep re sharpening the tungsten

keep a really short arc and run your torch at about 10 degrees push angle

keep the filler rod in the argon as you go to prevent contamination, but be careful not to touch the electrode to the filler

pratice stringer beads with no filler until you get the hang of it then start to add the filler as you would oxy welding

oh yeah, as already mentioned you need to use straight argon at about 8-10 litres per minute

This may be true, but mine is both DC and AC, and can be set up for pos or neg ground. KAOS, what kind of welder do you have?

Hiko, are all your landyachts done with the tig too?

cheers

from what i can make out it is only DC . its 200amp tig/ mma DC inverter welder . i have always used mig , stick or oxy for many years as i have been in the motor trade. now i have free time i can indulge in some new stuff . so why not give tig a crack .

My first one was a stainless framed Class5 and I had access to the Tig for that one
The last two minis I have had to resort to stick welding and the scrap steel bin
mostly at the recyclers

i made my present this year abstract art made completely from 316 marine grade stainless scrap. Will look better in the new house adjacent to stainless steal appliances on an open living ( with fridges etc in view) ill post pictures of the gallery and entrance in the new house when complete!_____ The stainless is 300 bucks a sheet and the 10mm poly is just as much a square metre. Why would people throw it out in a bin ?
cost 0$ just a bit of time and skills

mine is better than this crap.
