Did anyone watch England vs Argentina last night?

How good was the battle between the forwards!!! It was like old style rugby!

Battered, bleeding heads and large men smashing the crap out of each other. It was so good to finally see a good piggy slug fest of good rucks and mauls.

I just wish they'd get rid of the crouch, touch, pause...............engage rule. So many scrums were pulled up for mistiming the engage. Go back to crouch, pause, engage rule I reckon. Piggies can't count to four!!

I'm lucky to still have a TV set after Argentina kept missing their penalty kicks. Good thing I was too pissed to throw straight.

Having played proper rugby as a prop (as a lad, in high school)... bugger the touchy, feely pause crap. It should be ready... crouch... smack the other buggers and push 'em off the flamin' field!

Lots of whistle blowing - the Aussies conceded 15 penalties in the game yest. If some of the teams had brought along players who could kick there would have been some good upsets - Argies and Wales to name just two. Who ever would have thought Jonny Boy would miss 5 in a row - I imagine there have been times where he missed no more than 5 kicks all season! The Argies blew that one big time and the Welsh were unlucky having that penalty kick ruled to have not gone over - that fella sure kicks them high.

Agree! England will be pleased to get that result. Very tough first game in my oppinion. Gutted for the Welsh. What was wrong with using the video ref?

I was stunned to sit down and watch the Italy game at half time to see the score at 6 all. Anyone who was around in the seventies would scoff at that prediction.

It is a lot more competitive than I thought it would be. I could have scored some points if Wales had beaten South Africa. Have a Cheetahs supporter, well The Cheetahs supporter visiting tonight[}:)]

I only made it to second row and flanker. There are so many problems with the new scrum rule that was designed to save injury.

Crouch, hold, engage..... it was consistently easy and scrums were such a powerful tool in the tactics of the game.

Now the timing is all out and each ref pauses for a different duration.

Scrums are crap to watch now.

Wales looked on fire! They had some great runs, just finishing them with a silly mistake is such a bummer!

Fox have been playing old game (from the 70s and 80s etc) and the umpire occasionally will direct his two fingers together to initiate a scrum.
There is rarely a reset, the game is hardly stopped to set it up and is a lot more fun to watch.

I understand the new rules are to prevent scrum injuries, it's just too much screwing around now.

Well I feel a bit sick after that...

Take nothing away from the Irish. They played an amazing game and deserved their win no questions asked.

What was that for a Wallaby performance? Hat's off to Beale for being the only Ozzy who wanted to win. Aussie forwards were played off the park at the scrum and didn't bother to show up anywhere else.

BLECH!!

If you played the same 15 at the semi's you would lose the final because all of your players would be exhausted from scoring so many tries.

I was overcome with emotion in that last comment.

To be honest I have just had to race back through what will happen now as this scenario was not on my list! Seems you will now play South Africa in the quarters. In a way this is good for us from my perspective as I always rated those teams as our biggest problems - but now we only need to beat one of you to win it as opposed to two if other things go according to plan. Or maybe we will lose to the French so we can go to the other side of the draw all together.........wow that would be interesting. I imagine Englands odds have shortened dramatically now.

England into $11 and Aust out to $7. Good odds if you still back yourself I reckon.

Didn't think to put a spoiler alert on. I'm watching the Broncos smash the Dragons(hopefully) at 10pm on delayed tcast. SO GOOD to have rugby on WA television for a change. Normally we get more farking netball and the sissy's version of netball (cough**afl) here.
I'm now going into com's quarantine for the next few hours.

Wallabies had nothing. They were out-pigged by the Irish. Wait til they have to play against a really strong side like SA or NZ. It's all over for them.

Good old fashioned Northern Hemisphere rugby shuts down the "dumb" Aussie forwards which in turn stifled the backs.

This is WCR and it is boring to watch a lot of the time but that's what England, Ireland or France will have to do to win the cup....

The Wobblies will have to pick up bonus points and win against the USA and Russia and hope that Russia or (more likely) Italy beat the Irish - they looked pretty damn good tonight. Where did that game come from ??? - the Irish haven't won in months !!

To finish top of pool C we need Italy to beat Ireland to avoid (most likely) SA in QF3 and then NZ in SF2.

Damn I'm really nervous now that we will drop out in the quarters. The Kiwi supporters will be breathing a little easier after watching that game. NZ were looking pretty good before but now they look a whole lot better....

Robbie Deans must pull his hair out sometimes

This has been coming for the Wallabies for a while. Too long have they relied on imported talent in the back line or a couple of superbly talented pigs -aka Phil Waugh or George Smith (Manly boy ).

World cup rugby against teams who like playing in the wet are testing the Wallaby's piggies and they are coming up short.

No good having fast backs if the single-digit boys can't penetrate or scrummage properly.

IMHO, after watching the Boks the other night I think they have the kettle to go all the way.

Here's a thought. Super 15 rugby should add a Pacific Island team and an Argentina team to the mix. How good would that competition be??

The Irish lose against Russia or Italy? That sounds like optimistic thinking on the back of the morale boost from yesterday. I'd get used to the fact that it will be RSA in the next round and hope for some serious loss of form from them!!!

The Wallabies had no fire in their eyes. It's as if they wanted the game to end. They were high-fiving like a women's volleyball team early in the game - not a good sign.

To my amazement, US TV was showing replays of an old game UK-Oz here, Campo, Farr-Jones (91 maybe?). Today's players are so much bigger and faster, and yet the Aussie game was all talent, intuition and some genius and sacrifice then.

Oh Woe, Woe, bloody football, that is what happens when you put your hope into other peoples performance.

The irish were full of wanting to win and the Wallabies were not. They did not appear to have any passion. It is all very well being technically perfect, which they weren't anyway, but there did not appear to be any fire there.

Bigwavedave, inclusions of Pacific Islander teams in the Super 15 is a great idea but I would not hold out any hope unless South Africa pulls out at the end of the contract. Rugby Union is so insidiously fraught with politics, both NSW and Queensland, that it inhibits the games potential to grow. Ask Ewen McKenzie, the worlds best coach and smartest prop. Bloody Victorian to boot!

Without optimism we may as well pack up and switch the telly off. Stranger things have happened than Ireland losing - remember this is (from memory) the first game that they have won against any of the top tier teams for quite a while.

I can only HOPE that Italy come good in 2 weeks and beat Ireland. Wishful thinking though I think.....

Just got back from tripping around the Nth Island for the first 10 days. First time to NZ but 3rd World Cup and have to say the Kiwi's are putting on a bloody impressive event. Got to 5 live games and have watched the remainder in some of the best pubs and clubs I've ever been to. If you're a kiwi give yourselves a big pat on your back for really turning it on.

Thanks for that Sausage. I shall pass on yr thoughts to a relative of mine who is helping to run the show. I am glad that you made it over and had a blast - it pained me to see my brother and his eldest son in Hamilton at the AB's game on Friday whilst I was on the other side of the Tasman doing work. Most of the family has now been to 1 or 2 games from the lesser sides as well. From the looks of things it sure does seem like a great event and all the feedback I have heard from people is super positive - much like my epxerience of the Sydney Olympics when I first moved over here - that was one well run event!

Seems there has been a big buy-in from throughout the country - my nephews are always telling me on skype about all the school projects they are doing - all based on teams from the RWC. Must be some fun learning going on!!
