Used to have a white one, now got a green one. 2.8 Diesel, AWD, LWB, sunroof (need that in Tassie summers). Took this photo one summer on my way to go windsurfing. You can even see a harness strap through the side window.

I'd rather own a hatchback in sunny WA, than own a van in snow covered Tasmania

Just remembered, there's a van that lives down the road from me with a big sticker across the back window that says "no van is an island". love it.

Personally (I have never owned a van), i dont like them. They are harder to see past than 4wds. They are slow, they all look exactly the same, they look unstable, sitting backwards sucks, and they look unsafe (limited crumple zone at the front).
Who wants to join my club[}:)]

I do think they are practical for carrying stuff around, or lots of people. I didnt say they werent good, i just dont like them. Like I hate hummers, im sure they are fine, but i think they are for *insert inappropriate word*
I would however have a 4wd van. perfect for exploring a few little offraod things.
ps, i have a white car, can i join the club?

Change my mind by proving me wrong.

Vanity - love it!
Yeah I cruised around SW WA in a bedford back in the mid 90's, was great. Also had a Kombi for 10 years.

First mistake, how can you possibly pass comment on van ownership?

They are harder to see past than 4wds.

Hardly a problem if you happen to be the driver of the van

They are slow

If I'm not mistaken, even WA roads have speed limits. My 20 year old 2.4L Diesel van with 322,000kms on the clock can still do the speed limit loaded with guys and gear, no tickets no worries.

they all look exactly the same

Yes, the same way as all yellow hatchbacks look the same,
and all green utes look the same,
and all blue sedans looks the same
and all red convertables look the same....

they look unstable

Having previously rolled a 4x4, I would still prefer to drive a van.

sitting backwards sucks

So don't travel on trains

and they look unsafe (limited crumple zone at the front).

Don't crash

Who wants to join my club[}:)]

Is that the 'I have never owned a van but I hate them club'
or the 'All vans suck and are unstable but I would like a 4x4 L300 Club'?

I do think they are practical for carrying stuff around, or lots of people.

The first intelligent thing you've said.

I didnt say they werent good, i just dont like them.

Ahh, like brocolli?

Like I hate hummers, im sure they are fine, but i think they are for *insert inappropriate word*

I like hummers, isn't that where the lady goes hmmmmmmmm while .......

I would however have a 4wd van. perfect for exploring a few little offraod things.

Nice, slower and more top heavy than a regular van, which you don't like

ps, i have a white car, can i join the club?

No, as I previously mentioned all white cars look the same.

Change my mind by proving me wrong.

You can make luuurve in a van, with twins.
(I have never done this but it would be possible I'm sure)

Hey in that article, when you refer to buying a "spare parts number" from the wreckers I hope you don't mean a VIN?

in fact, i just told the wife, "this is the van i'm going to buy". to which she replied, "no, you're not". how come she's allowed to drive a bloody nice landrover, and i'm not allowed a bedford van??? women just dont understand what old, savagely styled, REAL machines make us lads feel like. GREAT, THATS WHAT! bloody hell.

You know the Beddie was great fun and looked cool, but I must admit to becoming a bit tired of certain 'characteristics' such as:

* Only doing 90Kmh (with engine screaming like it's doing 160Kmh because of the stupid 3 speed gearbox)

* Floor temp going high enough to fry eggs due to engine location.

* Completely random 'headlights off' electrical fault, usually occurring when negotiating a bend at 90kmh.

* Having to slam every door half a dozen times to get them shut properly....

I miss my Beddie....

thats why we love them... i just got rid of a 1994 hilux dual cab, 2.8 diesel. best bloody wheels i ever owned. it hated any sort of hills in anything higher than 3rd gear, and completely un economical at 110kph (which was flat out), but christ, the bloody thing went anywhere, you could sit upright underneath it whislt doing the servicing etc, you could put 2 tonnes of wood in the back, and it had quarter lights. cars just dont have those sorts of features any more.

This might be what you want then.

My camper, affectionately known as "The Pale Pig".

It's only problem is that it is no good bashing down bush tracks with low headroom. (which I love doing so it's a bit of a blot in that respect.)

But, it's great for up North, along beaches, in the dunes etc.
I put my surf stuff up top which keeps the lower level mostly clear.
I put a few more pics in the "OTHER" section and they are listed with my profile.
