I've got no idea. I haven't been camping since I was at school. I'm a cheap motel man - I love em. I always write on the back of the paintings what I think of the motel. If you stay in a motel and the one painting in the room has writing on the back of it it's probably me.

Back on topic, I'm going camping for a week and want a tent for myself for a week.

I don't want to get wet. I don't want to spend too much money.

I'll probably need a torch too, as the tents I remember at school didn't have a light switch.

I have got a sleeping bag and fishing gear though.

Wait for the specials at camping stores just before Easter.
If it is just for you a little dome tent will be fine - in one of those sales at Easter or Chrissy I picked up one of the so-called 2 person (really one person) domes about 1800x1800 for $25 down from $50

But buy (or make from 8mm steel rod) some decent pegs as the standard ones are crap even in $400 tents.

It depends on how big you want your tent to be... Or how small you want it to be...

If you're camping at a proper site, the bigger the better...

Kings Castle - $250

Flips up in seconds.... $150

On a tight budget.... $50

I've got one similar to the $250 one. It basically has a bedroom, and a lounge/kitchen/storage/esky area, separate.

Get one of those tents that you just throw into the air ... And it magically puts itself up .

They are so cheap.... Because when it's time to pack it up , no one can , so just scrunch it up quickly so you look like you know what you are doing . Stick it in the boot and drive away .

It's a bin job when you get home .

Mark is on the money. Get a dome tent as they are pretty easy to put up and they don't take much room. Even if you are on your own, get a two or three man tent. They are usually made in China and are pretty cheap.

Yep what Moby said about the sizes.
If they say its a 2 man tent, they would want to be two very friendly men.

I have a 3 man dome tent, enough room for one, if you want a bit of room to have more than yourself laying down .eg bag of gear, eskie of beer etc.
Cost $40 from Big dub.
Have used it heaps and had no dramas, even in pissteling down rain.
Only take 5 mins to put up , thats if you set it up before you have had lots of holiday beers.
In which case you just throw it out of the bag on the ground and roll yourself up in it.

I'm camping at steep point. I was concerned about the pegs - from the pics of the place it looks like the paper clip type pegs that come with these tents wont cut it - is that right?

haha, that's gold

Not so good if there is nothing to tie it to, but otherwise awesome! Great for places with no flat/dry ground to pitch a tent on. I have spent a few nights sleeping directly over running creeks on mountains in North Queensland in areas where there is no chance of pitching a tent.

If this product is not for you, get a dome tent plus a silver tarp (durarig) to lay over it to keep it cool in the day and dry in the rain.

Enjoy

If it is just for yourself the OZ Trail Tourer 9 is a great tent.

Out of the bag, unfold, peg the four corners then push the centre pole up the middle of the roof. Instant tent. If it is raining you will really appreciate it.

You will also appreciate the nearest cheap motel room.

The Tourer 9 is or was the tent most used by the camping bus tours. It is a proper canvas tent with door and window awnings and stand up room inside plus built well enough to last a lifetime. I have one that I bought second hand for $150 with a stretcher included.

Value for money I do believe the OZ Trail 6V Classic Dome is as good as it gets and they were on special for $97 at Christmas. I would sleep no more than 3 people in one though.

If you want to camp in style though you should look at something like this.

Van, 97, five speed manual with air and steer and 134,000 klm on the clock, $1,000. Roadworthy and rego $1,000. OZ Trail Event 16 dome, $200.

Good idea to take one of these along for warmth and comfort.

For steep don't bother, just get a swag and sponge off your mates that,ll have base camp set up. Much nicer sleeping under the stars, no mossies and the flies will wake you up for the early fish. A tarp off the car will provide any shelter you need.
If you want to borrow a swag I have a few ranging from simple jobbies to a double that is pretty much a tent in itself, bugproof screens the lot.
If you're camping at the Point itself tent pegs are next to useless, tie off to rocks. If you,re camping back from the Point you'll need long pegs as it's beach sand.
PM me if you would to borrow one.

Steep point, first 2 photos couple of years ago, the rest last year.
You want some hardcore pegs, and ropes. The wind up there is pretty insane.
Big swell ran for a couple of days last year, fault line had a nice point break.
Couldnt really fish in it, but good to kick back and watch, listen to some tunes and sink some cold ones :)

Thanks for the tips everyone and for the fantastic photos - it looks like an amazing place.

Now what's a good fishing rod/reel to have up there. I have a sturdy surf rod and a couple of good quality Pen reels and braid. Probably could do with another rod though.

I went to a fishing shop last week and made the mistake of asking them what I'll need up there. They made me feel like I was wasting my time unless I bought a $400 rod and a $500 reel from them.
