Which town in Australia is the closest to the continental shelf and how far is it?
ChatGPT reckons it's Esperance, but I'm pretty sure it's Bermagui. Maybe it's some UHF, VHF thing.

And when you say "been to the shelf" you mean sat in a boat on top of it ? as opposed to dived down 200m+ and seen the ocean floor where it is steeply sloping, or flown over it in a aeroplane and looked out the window ?
I reckon Ballina or Byron would be close, or somewhere down Port Arthur way if you include Tassie, as it still sits on the same continent.
Tip of Fraser island doesn't have any towns, unless you include bogan 4WD tent cities on Aussie Day holiday week.
Albany would be closer than Esperance, but still further than the east coast towns.

I reckon you hide yourself from this thread as once you read about what goes on out in the play zone aka over the edge you'll want it banned.
In regards to closest to the edge or over the edge for the purposes of catching demons of the deep. NSW East coast = South west rocks, Seal rocks, Nelson Bay, Jervis Bay and Bermi. Fraser Island should get a mention too but it's not mainland per say
West coast = Exmouth. There is a few places closer but aren't as productive due to the sea floor creating areas that do / don't hold bait. Be great to see a blue marlin thread on here ! Love getting vaccinated / switch baited on those needle nose predators !

Townsville not close to the shelf at all.. its 100 nautical miles. cairns, innisfail way closer but still not close compared to the other answers. Even Sydney is quite close i understand.

i guess town definitions aside i would say it would be a toss up between cocos (west or home island) Christmas or Norfolk island

also the lower the frequency the better for long range radio transmission.
On the East coast looks like a toss up between Tathra and South West Rocks.

I do have an irrational fear of the shelf. Been out there a few times tuna fishing. It's something I've been meaning to do again, but my plans were thwarted by the pandemic.
