Which town in Australia is the closest to the continental shelf and how far is it?
ChatGPT reckons it's Esperance, but I'm pretty sure it's Bermagui. Maybe it's some UHF, VHF thing.
If you are male and haven't been to the shelf I don't think you have the right to perceive yourself as a real man.
Agree or disagree?
The closest town in Australia to the continental shelf would depend on which part of the continent you are referring to. The closest town to the continental shelf in the east coast would be Townsville, which is approximately 150 km from the shelf. The closest town in the west coast is probably Exmouth, which is around 100 km from the shelf. However, these are approximate figures and could vary depending on the specific location and measurement methods used.
The Australian continental shelf is a geographical term referring to the underwater area surrounding the Australian continent. It does not have any bearing on one's masculinity or manhood. Being a "real man" is a societal construct and it's defined differently by different cultures and individuals. It's not accurate to say that someone's masculinity is determined by whether or not they have been to the Australian continental shelf. It's important to recognise that everyone's experiences, identities and perspectives are unique, and it's not appropriate to make assumptions or judgments about someone based on limited information. Everyone should be allowed to define and express their own masculinity in the way that feels most authentic to them.
I'm referring to the whole of Australia.
Bermagui is only 20km from the continental shelf

I'm only searching VHF, what does UHF tell you?
Mainland only ?
And closest town as in shortest distance to get boat from a town-sized settlement to the edge of the shelf ?
And when you say "been to the shelf" you mean sat in a boat on top of it ? as opposed to dived down 200m+ and seen the ocean floor where it is steeply sloping, or flown over it in a aeroplane and looked out the window ?
I reckon Ballina or Byron would be close, or somewhere down Port Arthur way if you include Tassie, as it still sits on the same continent.
Tip of Fraser island doesn't have any towns, unless you include bogan 4WD tent cities on Aussie Day holiday week.
Albany would be closer than Esperance, but still further than the east coast towns.
I have now peer reviewed your assessment and can concur it is probably Bermagui.

I'm only searching VHF, what does UHF tell you?
VHF stands for "very high frequency" and refers to radio frequencies in the range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz. UHF stands for "ultra high frequency" and refers to radio frequencies in the range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz. In general, VHF is used for longer-range communications, such as marine and aircraft communication, while UHF is used for shorter-range communications, such as television and two-way radios. In the context of your question, it is likely that VHF would be the appropriate frequency range for marine communication in the area near Bermagui and the continental shelf.
Murray (Mer) Island, Torres Strait.
12km to shelf.
Island sits on the same shelf as mainland continent so it must count.
Population 450 or so, so big enough to be a town.

Hey Carantoc,
I reckon you are right. What is the prize myscreenname is going to send you ?
Free trip to the shelf ?
Geez this thread really went off on a tangent quickly, now to bring it back to the ops comment, you're not a man unless you can build a house and fix a car. I'll raise the bar and suggest a real man can provide for and protect women and children at the same time.

The idea that a person's gender defines their abilities or characteristics is not accurate or fair. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and it's important to recognise and respect that. Providing for and protecting loved ones is a noble goal for anyone, regardless of gender. Gender should not be used as a benchmark for determining a person's worth or capabilities.

I think a real man puts on lycra and rides his pushbike around the town, really angrily.
What do others think?

I reckon you hide yourself from this thread as once you read about what goes on out in the play zone aka over the edge you'll want it banned.
In regards to closest to the edge or over the edge for the purposes of catching demons of the deep. NSW East coast = South west rocks, Seal rocks, Nelson Bay, Jervis Bay and Bermi. Fraser Island should get a mention too but it's not mainland per say
West coast = Exmouth. There is a few places closer but aren't as productive due to the sea floor creating areas that do / don't hold bait. Be great to see a blue marlin thread on here ! Love getting vaccinated / switch baited on those needle nose predators !
ill further clarify in the morning once my hands are less full or the lads stop winding them in!

Townsville not close to the shelf at all.. its 100 nautical miles. cairns, innisfail way closer but still not close compared to the other answers. Even Sydney is quite close i understand.
someone volounteered mer.
i guess town definitions aside i would say it would be a toss up between cocos (west or home island) Christmas or Norfolk island
and myscreename u sound like the drongo willem power fish - you're not a man till you've had a man
and whats so good about the shelf anyway? might be good if you have poor shallow water fishing i spose.
also the lower the frequency the better for long range radio transmission.
On the East coast looks like a toss up between Tathra and South West Rocks.
Kited round Hat Head. Was pretty spooky. Massive current and turbulence.

Well, also important if you want something to go missing as efficiently as possible.
Im guessing maybe myscreenname has an irrational fear of "the shelf", and figures everyone else must suffer from it as well.

I do have an irrational fear of the shelf. Been out there a few times tuna fishing. It's something I've been meaning to do again, but my plans were thwarted by the pandemic.

Most probably would be HF if it was a commercial vesell
So it's the edge of the shelf you're talking about? I guess the shelf is fisho jargon for the edge of the shelf, like a 5 metre sail is really a 5 square metre sail. ![]()
