World's oceans in 'shocking' decline.

"The oceans are in a worse state than previously suspected, according to an expert panel of scientists.

In a new report, they warn that ocean life is "at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history".

They conclude that issues such as over-fishing, pollution and climate change are acting together in ways that have not previously been recognised."

haha you have a short memory, I was just mirroring the sentiments in the other thread, where people were confused as to why we cared about 'meaningless mammals' when human children were being mistreated..

I have worked in the seafood industry, and I used to get in a lot of trouble for throwing the occys back alive.. I like occys, they are smart, they used to eat the crayfish that paid my wages. My fellow deckhand used to throw them at the cabin laughing at their attempts to spray ink at him, he hated them with a passion, because they ate the crays that paid his wages..

Foxes are only vermin cause we have let them become vermin, we brought them to an environment which we had removed the apex predators. This is what is happening in the oceans. Every environment needs predators. There always needs to be a bigger fish.

The marine equivalent to our foxes is what is happening off the coast of America. They over fished all the sharks and now the Humbolt squid has taken over, is it the Squids fault, or ours? We killed all the squids natural predators.

www.scientificamerican.com/article/humboldt-squid-expansion/

I care about foxes cause they are intelligent, wild animals. But they do need an apex predator to keep them in check.

Foxes are an introduced species as are rabbit and wild pigs ect so they need to be killed. Foxes are native to the UK but they still hunt them there because they are a pest.

Oh sure, they got that already. That'd be that introduced monkey species homo sapiens that does that.

Could be wrong here but i believe squid are the 2nd most intelligent animals after (allegedly) intelligent humans.

Now I love calimari and virtually all forms of cooked (and pickled) squid, but I started to feel bad about dining out on squid - kind of in the way some people don't eat pork coz pigs are supposed to be very intelligent.

Then I was informed that due to over-fishing squid numbers are going ballistic.

So it seems it's all good to feast out on the next smartest creature on Earth, in fact it may be helpful.

Sometimes the world is a weird place.

And yes Panda, it is bloody depressing what the way the oceans are being plundered and abused... by the most intelligent creature on Earth (allegedly)

There are 12 species of 'Fox' and is native to Africa, all of Europe, the Arctic and both north and south America..

Cane beetle was the wrong predator, mostly cause they didn't eat the beetles. That was a naive attempt at biological control which was disastrous. A better example would be the Prickly pear cactus, we introduced its natural predator and it's no longer a problem.

Luckily some guys in lab coats isolated a fungus that killed cane beetles.. Now for the toads..

Wasn't there a species that looks like it came from Africa or the middle-east that has been very destructive?

Do they need to be killed off entirely, or do we just move back to Africa? (I don't have a visa)

Nah, as far as I know (happy to be corrected - and too lazy to google it) occies are no dummies either - and know a thing or two about world soccer - but certain squids are the dux of the class.

Can't seem to find the squid sneaks up and eats occy vid?

I saw a funny footage by Cousteau about an octopus that was leaving his tank at night to go in the surrounding tanks and feed on the fish that was kept there. They could not understand where the fish was disappearing so they put a camera and let it run all night, the octopus found out how to lift the glass panel on top of his tank would go eat a few fish and come back in his tank looking very innocent in the morning.

Ooops - it was a cuttlefish.

I'd imagine that occies, squid and cuttlefish are all more intelligent than half the public. Should get some of em in parliament.

Pigs are clever.

Taken from www.freewebs.com/chickensneedlovetoo/meettheanimals.htm

- Pigs:
IN THE WILD OR AS PETS: Pigs are extremely intelligent! They are often said to be smarter than dogs and cats and quicker at learning than chimpanzees. Pigs can play video games with a joystick, put puzzles together, and play instruments to complete simple songs.
Pigs are friendly, loyal, and brave when kept as pets. (A pig named Priscilla even saved a boy from drowning!) They are very clean and avoid soiling their living areas. They do not sweat; so they lay in the mud (or preferably water) to stay cool in the heat.
Pigs have an keen sense of smell and have been used by the military to sniff out mines and by airport security to sniff out illegal substances. Some pigs are used as guide-animals for blind or disabled people.
Female pigs are called sows and males are called boars - babies are called piglets. A sow's litter will usually have 7-12 piglets. Pigs are social animals and form life-long friendships with each other. They use grunts, squeals, and 'oinks' to communicate.
These incredible animals can run a mile in just 7 minutes; that's much faster than most people! Adult animals have 44 teeth. Pigs have four toes on each hoof but only walk on two toes per foot.

IN FACTORY FARMS:
As babies, piglets are taken away from their mothers when they are less than 3 weeks old. Their tails are cut off, some of their teeth are cut off, and the males have their testicles ripped out, all without any pain relief. They spend their entire lives in overcrowded pens on a tiny slab of filthy cement.
Breeding sows spend their entire miserable lives in tiny metal crates where they can't even turn around. Shortly after giving birth, they are once again forcibly impregnated. This cycle continues for years until their bodies finally give out and they are sent to be killed. When the time comes for slaughter, these smart and sensitive animals are forced onto transport trucks that travel for many miles through all weather extremes—many die of heat exhaustion in the summer and arrive frozen to the inside of the truck in the winter.
Pigs are so intelligent that they often go insane in their small, prison-like cages, that are less than 2-feet wide. They can barely lie down comfortably! The pigs develop huge sores from their close quarters.
Noxious fumes fill the sheds the pigs live in. Often their cages will be over grated metal pan of slats. Underneath, there will be a massive pit of manure, vomit, urine and blood. Small pigs get their legs caught in the slats, leaving them with huge open wounds. Pigs are denied medical treatment or vet care.
The pigs are given small rations of unhealthy and plain-tasting grain. Mixed with the grain is often the chopped remains of other pigs, cows, fish or birds. The pigs are fed tons of hormones and growth drugs.
The pigs are constantly crying out for help. They will never have a happy day their whole life. They will never frolic in a meadow or swim in cool water. Most will never even be able to walk more than the distance of getting from pen to pen or from pen to truck.
When they need to be moved from pen to pen, the pigs are beaten with lead pipes or baseball bats. They do what the workers ask of them but are still subjected to some of the worst animal cruelty in the world. Many animals become crippled from their frequent beatings. Crippled pigs are killed through starvation or having a concrete cinder block dropped on their skulls.
When the pigs are just 6 months to a year old, they are sent to the slaughterhouse.
At the slaughterhouse, most of the animals are dead, starved, dying of cancerous tumors (very common) or crippled. As long as they are breathing, they will be turned into human food. They are shot in the face/head with a nail gun. This will only stun and hurt them! Then they are dragged up in chains and ropes by their back feet. Their necks are ripped open and they bleed out, spinning and squealing wildly. After that, about 20% are still alive. They are dropped into vats of scalding water to remove hairs. 8% are still alive as they are dismembered, for the the skinning...

According to recent reports, more than one million pigs die in transport each year, and an additional 420,000 are crippled by the time they arrive at the plant. Nearly 70% of the pigs have pneumonia when they arrive. Most of them are still fully conscious when they are immersed in scalding water for hair removal.

Sucks to be a pig unless you are in a petting zoo.
