Just read on the abc website about it .weird .bom said no cloud there can't explain it .no reply from defense dept yet .
It was a result of a military exercise.
I was at the beach watching the fighter jets involved in the exercise.
Having just come back from Canberra after 8 years I can say the chem trails there must the nastiest...all day long they fly over between Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne spraying something that must be neuro-depressant over the population to keep them docile.
how else do we explain Canberra productivity and political stupidity.
Now I'm back in Perth I feel heaps more lively... and intelligent

I sometimes wonder if the clouds are looking down and saying to each other, "Hey, check this out, some of those people are shaped like idiots...."

If it's a military exercise then I'd be guessing it's chaff from a military plane trying to avoid a missile lock.
Doubt they'd be live-firing missiles though. Also chaff is usually dropped and then the plane turns the other way, not usually dropped continuously through 180 degrees (twice!)
Seems unlikely that it's condensation from a jet exhaust, given the abrupt start and stop nature of it, but stranger things have happened in the air due to weird inversion layers and the like.
So I've got nothing

And you would believe it too JB.
I wouldn't have though that condensation/contrails would be thick enough to have cause a RADAR return. If they were, this would've been seen far more often.
