No collisions or breakdowns this week. The waters south of Africa are infamous for flotsam. Charlie Dalin, skippering Apivia, is still leading and approaching the half way point. The IMOCA boats apparently only hit maximum speed under ideal conditions. So far it's been rough so they pick the best speed to harmonise with the wave action.
Jean Le Cam, the 62 yr old veteran, is 6th but it's anybody's race. The solo rules insisted there could be no help for Jean from the rescued Kevin, Jean had to cook for him as well. (they did concede that Kevin was able to make Jean a coffee though). When Jean finally retires from sailing he's going to make movies.
Sodebo, the maxi tri going for the Jules Verne trophy, is sitting on 30 knots and still ahead of the pace of current holder IDEC Sport. But IDEC sport had a dream run across the Southern Ocean. It looks like in this event that as soon as they fall off record pace they head to the nearest port and go home. The crew of Edmond de Rothschild, having returned for repairs a week or so back, is waiting for good weather forecast to set out again.
