Every year the bloody thing goes up !!

This yr my beloved insurance company sends me my new quote for $499.78 in the post. I check on-line and can get it for $416.

I have two comprehensive car polices, 2 greenslips and home insurance with the one mob - never had a traffic infringement or an at fault crash in 25yrs of driving. I call them up and immediately they drop my quote down to $422. It feels like a win. But I am annoyed. Why the farrrrk do I have to call them up for the best price - perhaps people just pay whatever comes their way and never bother to check? Jeepers it annoys me that in this day and age that I still have to call them for the best price - why can not they just give me the best price first up? Do they not know that I have a busy life and I do not enjoy calling them I think when the next one comes up I might just sit down and re-price everything and potentially move my business elsewhere - I am over it. Rant over.

Nah, nah, you got it all wrong. They brought it in so that it would open up competition and make rego cheaper... It was. For the first year, and then it went up for some reason.. who would have figured that moving something from public control to private enterprise makes it more expensive... who would have thunk it??

Having said that, I think I remember paying a fair bit for rego 20 years ago, so I'm not sure if it really has gone up that much, although it is surprising how much greenslip prices vary and how much they don't cover. At least with a government system it was easily understood.

I'm just not sure why Ted needs a new one every year.

It's what we New South Welshmen got when the government decided to help out the insurance companies by allowing them all to "compete" by offering third party person insurance that the government used to provide with registration. The government used to choose their own insurer/underwriter.

The insurance companies compete, but somehow they just never seem to go down on prices, but their profits sometimes go up.

It's called the "Lazy tax", check the wording in your policy fine print. Basically it gives the insurance company the right to charge loyal customers extra (because they are lazy and won't shop around), while offering competitive rates to lure new customers in. It was also mentioned on Tv a while ago (sorry shows name eludes me at present).

I've just found out the hard way not to just let a insurance renewal roll over on direct debit. Between cars, bike, contents and health insurance I apparently get a multiple policy discount, plus I get a corporate discount through work. Renewal on one of the cars came up a few weeks ago, with all the 'discounts' I checked online how much a policy would cost for a new punter and the annual difference was about $7. They basically take you for a sucker on the automatic renewal. Apathy clearly helps their bottom line.

If you don't like the way this country works then go back to Kiwi. Simple???

All the Kiwis that I work with are constantly telling me how much better it is over there.

I think you will find my issue is with the insurance companies not the actual country itself - given most insurers in NZ are owned by the same mob that own the Aussie ones it probably would not make too much difference anyway

All the Kiwis I know are awesome people. I'm glad they are here.
