6.20 a magpie attacks the plane

For the last 12 mths i have been flying PA planes, both the AMR and extra MX cant wait to add a new Addy X to the hanger. I had to laugh when i saw that video all of the crew involved with PA are a great bunch of guys.

my thoughts on the insane heli action:

is it technically amazing flying - hell yes

is it pretty to watch - not really. in fact it just looks plain silly.


personally i like the precision plane stuff with graceful lines and controlled arcs.

I disagree. The plane is more graceful but .... (oh no here we go, I'll upset the plane guys here) .. the heli is just straight out harder. By the time you can hover a heli in all orientations, a plane guy is doing circuits and rolls. You can fly a plane upside down with only elevator (one stick moved a bit) or take your hands off for a few seconds in level flight.

A heli requires 2 thumbs moving constantly in 8 directions just to stay in the air in normal hover or slow forward flight.... let alone the sh!t they are doing in 3D nowadays.

Plus a minor crash with a heli does not mean just a new prop and wing section like a plane would need - it means heaps more $$$ and many more hours setting up a rotor head with pitch gauges and balancing etc etc. I think you have to be much more committed to learn to 3D a heli (and have 2 jobs, no missus, and maybe be a bit loony )

Might not look as graceful but it is waaay more technical so I think it is a better watch for spectators.

But as I said your video was 'kn awesome and the flying was very special

I agree with you a bit but not 100%, i also fly helis at the club but due to the occasional crash i only fly hard 3d with my 450 sized heli, which in my worst crash so far has cost just under $200 to fix, but on average it works out to about $80 per crash. My next crash could be pricey as i am now using Radix CF blades which are close to $100 a pair and will chop the heli to pieces in a bad crash. The helis in that clip are mostly 50 and 90 sized helis they cost on average 300-500 dollars per crash. ouch. Set up is the worst part getting the heli to feel right and adjusted to suit your flying style can take between 4 hrs to weeks as some problems can be hard to track down and normally need a stripdown and rebuild to fix.

Helis are a lot more technical to fly and some people never make it past doing tail in hovers, being scared to crash, and scared of the blades that are swinging around at 3200rm doesnt help, nerves are a helis worst enemy. Maintenance is ongoing and helis need to be checked after every flight to make sure they are not going to fly to pieces next flight.

Spectator wise, most people think helis are amazing but generally get bored after a couple of minuets because they cant keep up with it and a lot of the moves all look the same, where as planes flying 3d really draw there attention. I fly my planes just to do something relaxing to rest the brain between heliflights, even though the heli is only in the air for around 4 mins it is mentally exhausting, there is not a lot of room for error and losing track of orientation will see the heli in the dirt.

I love this hobby.

I love this hobby.

Don't buy radix blades. Go to deal extreme in Hong Kong and get them for $10 a pair in 325mm (that is from memory) and free post.
I got heaps of sets when i was learning on a Blade400

When I did trash them I had a look and they were well made, very rarely they may have aresin bubble that needs to be popped and filled with some araldite so they balance easier. I found out of 5 sets only set needed a bit more tape to balance (they were as good to balance as standard Align woodies)
