Well the skate haters in freo put together a petition and brought about a halt to progress on the freo youth park. The missus and kids dragged me of my sick bed and off to the meeting at the town hall. 400+ crew more skate haters than you can point a truck at. After two hours of very intense and heated debate the skate haters motion was defeated and good had prevailed and the universe (skate park) is safe once again.

Heard some of the oldies were losing their ****. Also heard that the Freo council appeared very pro skatepark. Hopefully we end up with something decent. (The Mrs will be spewing, our little creatures visits might involve a bit of a skate soon :-) )

Geraldton built about 5 skate parts about 15 years ago. One larger one on eighth street. The other ones where is locations in corners of the town.

When the plan was hatched, every skater hater came out in force. Worried about the increas in crime and antisocial actions from the youth. 15 years later their concerns were unfounded and based on fear.

I feel the same is occurring in this instance.

mate there everywhere I was wind skating at netball courts & this bloke comes over & in a very aggressive manner tells me to move my truck or there going to lock me in with the gates. I told him I don't give a f____k ive got a cordless grinder . Whish I had a camera you should have seen the look on his face . I then told him it was no worries to move it & it would have been better to ask me nicely and don't ever talk to me like that again or ill get the ****s & he wouldn't like that

My kids never used our Mandurah skate park's but to me there should be more of them about.

Every time I see them ( I drive past every day) they are always occupied by kids of all ages.

What impresses me the most is the natural organization, everyone gets a run, it's a shame we lose this ability as adults.

Kids playing in a skate park are not the kids committing crime, it's the ones who aren't

More skate parks!

Totally agree with all the comments. There where a few of the haters loosing their cool. As the debate went on it was obvious that the haters negative attitude was fear based. The youth plaza has sections for bmx skaters skooters and parkour with heaps of seating and heaps more trees. Personally I think it will bring life to the area and hopefully is a test case thats provides a positive outcome and allows for more parks to be built in high profile areas such as the beach and inner city. The park is a great layout and the council have done a great job.

I'm no skate hater - running the "recommend me a longboard" thread at the moment.
I'm with the "skate parks are good healthy activity" crowd.

But wtf is this?

Promoting tagging as part of skate culture is nothing but a cheap cash in for the website, and not doing genuine skaters any good at all.
These guys should be ashamed. I won't be buying anything from them.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal to sell spray cans to under 18's in NSW, unless they are for "legitimate purposes":

Yep, it's illegal. So they have a warning. And you even have to check a box that says "I'm 18". I'll bet that stops the kids in their tracks.
PS you can pay by paypal too, which any kid can link to their bank debit account. No need for a credit card.

I think it's pretty poor to have a skateboard site and a fair chunk of your front page is flogging graffiti stuff.

I mean everyone loves a good mural but everyone hates taggers, which make up 99% of graffiti.

Simple fact is the more the general public links graffiti and skating, the less skate parks there will be. These guys are pretty irresponsible.

street art is part of skate culture. always has been. calling it graffiti and writing it off as kids tagging walls is pretty small minded, dave.

As a tagga would you not buy 4 cans for $10 from Auto Cheap?
and buy the paint off of the Boardshop site to paint your board?

Or am I to realistic to think a kid would buy paint from a web site and have to wait a week for it to arrive...hhmmmm

No skate parks? We'll skate in the streets. Then you'll REALLY have something to moan about. They just don't get it, do they?

We use to buy beer online from Woolies delivered to your door when we were under aged.

When they came to the door we would say "oh that must be for dad, he just got in the shower, if you wait for 10mins he will be out????,,,,or I can just sign it for you".
The 17 year old pimple faced driver never queried it.

What Im getting at is if teens want paint, beers, what ever,,,,their is always a way.
You wont stop them geting it, better off teaching them to be responsable with what they are doing than to try and stop access as this just adds to the excitment .

Our Town council just completed a massive upgrade on our skate park,Im 50 and i reckon its awsome!!!!!
a few smaller parks around town would be a good idea.
I plan to have a look at my bikes and see what i can build that wont hurt me too much

There is a huge difference between street art and tagging. Tagging is mindless destruction of another persons property. Street art is art and is open to the beholder as to whether they like it or not.

i know plenty of crew who buy these paints. none of them tag. all of the work is done with consent. most of it by request.

and if you'd rather see plain brick walls than something like this, then i feel sorry for you:

Nah mate. That would be just the same as doing graffiti except you would have a blank imagination or a warped sense of humour. You could still call it art though. I have seen worse.

Fark Troll if every kid with a fat tip nikko and 2 spray cans did that I'd be handing em out like candy bars.
I LOVE this kinda thing, stencil street art

Unfortunately "99% of Street art" is this

And most great murals get tagged real quick by some 12yr old trying to p!ss on every wall he passes to mark his territory
