Well this is fairly mind boggling, especially if you lived next door, but I don't think it's controversial.

Isn't this just a typical Guatemalan public toilet. 100ft deep long drop, just be careful not to fall in.

Seriously though, amazing wha mother nature dishes up.

Not to sure about that, never having seen a Guantemalen toilet.

I do know I would have been crapping myself if I lived next door though

A stink hole in a Guatemalan toilet takes you back to your days in the Navy Ken?

I wondered about that, presumably there's an underground river at the bottom of it, that caused the problem in the first place.
If you block the flow, the problem will move somewhere else. May be a big pipe or something at the bottom to allow water flow, then seal over that with concrete, and back fill with anything you want to get rid of, as long as it can be compacted.

I think the article in the paper suggested that it might have been caused by a water pipe or sewer leaking. It must have been a very porous soil though.

I think an enterprising developer should line it with concrete and add floors and use it for basement parking for a high-rise development. Think of all the savings on excavation costs.

I am not sure it looks like a place you would want to develop though.

I think the paper got it wrong, would have to have been a very deep water pipe, the new scientest explanation makes more sense, natural underground water, especially after the downpour they'd just had

1 June

A tropical storm has hit Guatemala, bringing with it torrential rains, adding to the disruption already caused by an earlier volcano eruption. Tropical storm Agatha hit the country on Saturday and so far has killed more than 100 people and left a swathe of destruction, including this gaping 60-metre-deep sinkhole in central Guatemala City.

Sinkholes form where the underlying rock is sedimentary or can be easily dissolved. Groundwater circulating through it dissolves the rock, eventually causing the surface to collapse.

And I've just discovered my link no longer works, I'll have to edit the first post.
