Not much good against Mako's apparently. My son was diving and had a Mako encounter of the close kind and found out that waving your shark shield in it's face didn't bother it. Got a bit cranky when he poked it with his spear too.

That was unexpected, was hoping to hear he took off like a bat out of hell, wonder how many species it does work on. Glad your son was OK, physically anyway. I get the impression that Makos are very stubborn, this one was a bit like a cat rubbing against a scratching pole.

Cheers, that was a good comparison, makes the ESDS look like a lucky charm, it's cheaper,ADR in the US and can't replace the battery where the Aussie Shark Shield can.
Bought the SS Freedom 7 today to use on the yak and some diving, piece of mind.
Oh, and just for a laugh made the front page of our community paper today.

He wasnt agressive, its the one you dont see that rams your yak at speed that you worry about.

We do a lot of kayak fishing offshore, and for jews at night out of kayaks.
Most nights you get a shark or 2 come and give you a bump and circle around sussing you out.
It definetly wakes you up when night fishing, they seem to bump you when your daydreaming and half asleep and it scares the poo out of you.
It is usually the same shark too, you see different markings/chunks missing in fins etc. We have given one a name now and is a bit dissapointing if he dosent come and play bumper cars with us at night.

We have found that nudging them with your paddle dosent scare them but makes them more keen and swimming faster. Better off just letting them give your kayak a taste test by tapping their nose against your yak, then they seem to realise its not tastie and swim away.

When you look at all the crew that do night dives and things like that and dont get eaten, I wouldnt worry too much.
Hope it dosent stop you yak fishing, its a good healthy sport...... If you dont get eaten

Windsurfing sux Is that better

I got my first yak mackeral this week,, only a spottie but was pretty stoked to pop my mackeral cherry.

Yeah, nothing worse than getting a decent fish , to only lose it in the last few minutes to a toothie critter. I have had a few bodyless fish boarded

I tried to board a hammerhead a few weeks back to reclaim my lure (after loseing 4 lures to them) and lost my grip/control over it. It was only 1.5m long, but its not a good feeling have a shark on board bashing and snapping out of control.
I now let them keep my lure to show off to the other sharks as some sort of cool shark bling.

Ok, that vid wasn't totally disgusting, congrats on the Mack, big a55 one for a Spotty and nice gaffing. Love the sound of reels in the morning, Macks do it best.

Mine weighed in at 15kg.
I usually use live bait like you, tailor, bonito, slimey mackerel, pike etc.
But some days livies are hard to find so I caught this one on a dead garfish rigged with a chin guard to swim it straight and keep it just under the surface, trolled around in 20m of water on the edge of shallower reefs where bait fish hang around.

Just had some spanish steaks for dinner,,,,,damn tasty.

I use both products when surfing. The ESDS is a lot more versitile and is easy to swap from board to board. The esds is better for the kids. I don't trust the esds as much as the shark shield. The esds is a pain in the arse to recharge. There is a bolt that needs to be removed so the charger can be plugged in. If the bolt is not secure and water enters the unit kiss your $460 goodbye. I bought three esds units one for each of the kids and one for me. I have had to replace three so so far. They just stop and cant be recharged. The esds just seems to have been thrown together a bit and would benefit from a few design changes. I nearly lost the shark shield of the back of the board once this product could be altered a bit ie two bolts to secure it to the frame.

I agree with the curiosity of sharks to a degree, but put yourself in their shoes (not that they wear shoes). They can smell a feed and know where it's comming from, like you say I don't think they're afraid of much so may mouth it as if it were a floating carcass, problem with a kayak is if he does it's going to take on water and sink. Seen a lot of footage of sharks chewing on props so glad he never showed those pearly whites.
That's very disappointing with the anklet fails Beast, not a cheap exercise x 3, I'll stick with the SS for now.
