A shark has attacked a surfer in WA's South West this morning.

It is understood the man was mauled while surfing at the South Point break near Gracetown just about 8am.

Witnesses said emergency crews worked on the man, who had been surfing by himself, on the beach.

It is understood he has life-threatening injuries.

An ambulance has taken the victim to Margaret River Hospital and the RAC rescue helicopter is on its way to the SW town.

In June this year a surfer survived a shark attack off the State's south coast, fending off two charges by the predator at Conspicuous Cliff beach near Walpole.
The have been several fatal shark attacks in WA in recent years: Brian Guest at Port Kennedy in 2008, deckhand Geoffrey Brazier off the Abrolhos in March 2005, surfer Brad Smith off Gracetown in July 2004 and swimmer Ken Crew off Cottesloe in November 2000. All were attributed to white pointers.

God I hope he makes it......bloody things they don't like the taste of us anyway.

Not a good outcome I'm afraid. RIP

Police say a surfer has died after being attacked by a shark at a beach near Gracetown, south of Perth, this morning.

Police say the man was surfing south of South Point when he was attacked at about 8:15am WSDT.

He received some treatment on the beach and was rushed to hospital but died shortly afterwards

Know what you mean DP. Sumpin about Sth Pt.

I used to go Nth point (in the right swell) or Huzzas but Sth Pt always seemd 'iffy' for some reason. And I last surfed there years before the previous fella was taken at Sth Pt.

Very sad for the family. Hope the poor bugger didn't see it coming and was over instantly.

Just to clarify the last bloke taken by a shark wasnt at South Point. His name was Brad and it was at Lefthanders. Rest in peace Brad.

My brother in law's, wife's, sister was one of the people who helped with CPR this morning. Her son was surfing Huzzas when it happened! Rest in peace Nicholas.

An attack occured on the east coast of northern nsw about 15 yrs ago also at a point break
The guy was knocked off his board and the noah grabbed the board and swam away with it , the surfer drowned because he couldnt reach his legrope while being towed under water
after a few minutes the shark dropped the board and disappeared
The guy died without a mark on him
Vale and condolences to our brothers on the west coast

Just talking to a guy about this. He surfed there while travelling around Australia about 6 years ago.

While in the line up a rather large shadow went underneath him. "Holy ****!!!" he says to an older surfer nearby, "Did you see that?!"

"Don't worry", says the older chap, "See that house up there on the hill. That's where I live. I see them all the time, they're always here. They never touch anyone."

A few weeks later somebody was taken.

That may be true - but I never get an uneasy feeling sitting out in the traffic or travelling lonely country roads... but grey skies and murky water makes me think twice... particularly when only a couple of blokes are out and may come in leaving you out alone.
